Ending of BOWERY BUGS

I hope I don't sound dumb, but I just didn't get the ending of BOWERY BUGS. Why did the old man buy the bridge?

To make a quick buck, people would pretend they owned the Brooklyn Bridge and sell it to gullible people, usually new immigrants, from what I've heard. Bugs must have told the old man he owned the bridge, and he told the story to get him to buy it. Bugs was a con-man/rabbit.

This reminds me --- & yes, I'm going off on a tangent here, a bit --- of that time on The A-Team when Face realized that one of their clients was a legendary con artist & hero of his. "This is the man who sold the Brooklyn Bridge, TO BROOKLYN!"
