It looks like Bendis is going to be 100% Marvel from now on.

ICON IMPRINT LAUNCHES THIS JULY WITH KABUKI, POWERS!

Marvel Comics announces the launch of ICON, a new publishing imprint that will produce projects utilizing properties outside of the Marvel Universe.

ICON will launch with two titles fans are already familiar with: Brian Bendis' "Powers" and David Mack's "Kabuki."

Marvel is not new to publishing licensed properties. It has had a successful history with such classic licenses as GI Joe and Transformers. However, Marvel, which works with the top talent in the comic industry, has long been considering ways to offer its creators a home not just for their Marvel projects, but for their other work. The new ICON imprint has been created with a mandate to pursue both these creator and licensed projects, while maintaining the highest level of talent and the brands that readers have come to expect from Marvel.

Saw this one coming a mile away.

It's great that Marvel is supporting creator-owned projects, but in this case, I think it's just to capitalize on the buzz behind Bendis and Mack. I'd be genuinely surprised if they made these sorts of offers to lots of creators within their company.

I'd be even more surprised if Marvel supported this new label for any considerable amount of time. I though that a big part of the whole rationale behind axing Epic was to focus 100% on their superheroes, and this decision would seem to run contrary to that...

Does that make Bendis exclusive to Marvel?

Its unofficial, but it seems like the entire purpose of the ICON line is to get Bendis from doing anything too successful without their logo on the book. He can still do creator-owned projects with other companies according to his exclusive contract to Marvel, but he won't need too now that ICON exists.
