Is the cartoon for the comic strip still in production?

I haven't heard anything on this is a while...

Is it still in production? Or did they find out that FOX cancels everything and wanted to pitch it to antoher network? :p

You probably don't want to see it.

They wanted it to be like FLCL.... anime-influence and broadcast network primetime do not mix.

I love The Boondocks. One thing that has me worried is how current can the series be? The production time on animation could compromise their timeliness. Either way, I'm still pysched.

Why would you say that?

As much as I like FLCL, the thought of a Boondocks show being like FLCL is downright troubling.

Those issues are always prevalent.

I think Matt was just saying the design 'look' for Boondocks would be like FLCL, not the tone. But that shouldn't be surprising, McGruder's Boondocks designs have always been Anime influenced.

Huge head, eyes that are either slits or saucers. Slight body. the design is a bit simplified but not all that far from FLCL.

Maybe it's be more accurate to say the look would be more like Teen Titans.

That would work. I love McGruder's earlier strips. As long as they slam Puffy and B.E.T. I'm okay.

Boondocks was in the midst of controversy a few months back. They ran a story-arc where the characters tried to find Condoleeza Rice a man. "Maybe if there was a man in the world who Condi truly loved, she wouldn't be so hell-bent to destroy it." Followed by days of Condi-bashing. The Washington Post actually pulled the strip until the story had run through. And a few days ago the characters talked about how the Passion would be more enjoyable if Pat Robertson was crucified.

So if you're at all political to any degree, you will either love or hate this strip. :D

Whoa  Our paper still doesn't get Boondocks, but maybe now that's a good thing. If everything else he does is like that, McGruder sounds like a total hate-filled basket case who belongs on talk radio, not authoring a comic strip.

Except unlike most pundits, Aaron McGruder is VERY funny. A lot of his ideas are extreme but I always find The Boondocks hilarious. His humor is full of rage against the system and it's good that he has an outlet.:D

In the forward to "A Right to be Hostile" the first Boondocks treasury he describes his strip as "A daily foot in the ass of the Man". His strip is really the first one to tackle race relations in an honest and refreshingly funny manner.

Here's a sample:

Ceaser: I know it's wrong to take pleasure in the suffering of others but part of me is really glad that Rush Limbaugh turned out to be a drug fiend.
Huey: Who told you that?
Ceaser: You didn't hear? It's been all over the papers for weeks!
Huey: No, I mean who told you it was wrong to take pleasure in the suffering of others?

:D

Are those books a collection of his older stuff or is it new material?

The Treasury is a mix of strips that began in 1999 and is surprisingly as recent as mid-2003. I highly recommend them. The other books are "Because I Know You Don't Read the Newspaper" and "Fresh For '01 You Suckas". This is the funniest comic strip since Calvin and Hobbes.

I really want this show to exist long enough for it to make it to Adult Swim...but in the current climate(always wanted to say that phrase) I doubt i will stay on for too long.

If one more person thinks we're talking about Boondock Saints I'm going to be upset.

As for the show, I wish it would air more than anything on this Earth. Boondocks is without a doubt the greatest comic strip ever to grace the Sunday papers.

It's witty insight into this country that's already starting to crumble, is trying to enlighten people to put some bricks back before this becomes "Roman Empire: The Sequel"

Puff Daddy, Rice, Whitney and Bobby's "Get Well Soon" card.

"Dear Whitney and Bobby,
Why don't the two of you stop it before someone seriously gets hurt."

The funniest thing this year has been Aaron's take that the democratic candidates were a lot like the Justice League, making Bush and Cheney the Joker and Lex Luthor.

Go to the website Redi gave out and try to find that comic, damn thing is priceless. While you're at it, go get Fresh for '01, it's about $16 at your local book store, it's got a sweet ass picture of Huey holding a samurai sword in a lil Japanese get up.

As for it being like FLCL, Matt, could you elaborate on that a little more. McGruder doesn't seem like the type to have completely random things happening to these characters.

If it's just the anime influence you're worried about, who cares, as previously mentioned the characters always looked anime-ish. They even did a strip about that where Huey was talkin about enlightening people by reaching them through looking like a popular trend such as anime.

And if the show bombed, maybe AS would pick it up.

SOMEONE make this show!!!

Boondocks is awesome! But Redi is right, the show probably won't air for long. The buttheads at Fox News will really be put off by it's anti-establishment tone. Rupert Murdoch can jump off a cliff for all I care. All I remember is that Bill O'Reilly tried to get the strip out of newspapers on the grounds that "It was bad for children". Yeah, Bill, the truth hurts and kids ought to be kept safe from YOUR drivel.

I wouldn't exactly call something that screaming extreme "truth." Of course, the same could be said for O'Reilly's material, but really, if people swallowed The Boondocks as fact, America would turn into Iraq with people waving guns and firing at any military figure.

The Boondocks may not be entirely accurate but it sure is thought provoking. 'Course I like anything that's anti-establishment and "a daily foot in the ass of the Man". Remember when Mad Magazine used to be funny?

Edit: Another cool thing about Boondocks is that even though Huey is a revolutionary, it's tempered by the wisdom of his Granddad who is much more moderate. (and in a lot of cases sensible.) Even though Boondocks has an anti-authority edge, like Doonesbury it let's the readers make up their own mind on a subject. It also does it with great humor. Huey is not infallible and that makes him that much more real.

The thing that this series has going for it besides the comedy is the cast of kids in the neighborhood. Now days the focus is mainly on Huey, Ceaser, and Riley(who would become the next Bart Simpson if given the chance)...but there a few more characters that offer different prespectives on topics Huey rants about.

It just has so much potential....
