Today marks the 10 year anniversary of Kurt Cobain's suicide. Can't believe its been that long already. I first became interested in the band in the fall of 1993 upon seeing the music videos for 'In Bloom' and 'Heart Shaped Box' on MTV. They quickly became my favorite band but alas, I never got to see them in concert or anything like that. My favorite band at the time (infact Nirvana was instrumental in my tastes at the time changing from rap music to rock), I certainly was devestated a short few months later when it occured. That only 2 bands in my opinion have passed them over the past 10 years (Type O Negative & Tool) is testement to how great a band it was. Unlike Metallica and many others, Nirvana ended at the top of their game rather than fading into mediocrity(Nevermind is praised to death, but In Utero was their best album), although for the most unfortunate reasons.

Although I do feel that Nirvana was over-rated to a certain extent, no one can deny their impact on the music scene. Alternative rock (and punk to a degree) owes a lot to Nirvana for exposing a new style of music to the mainstream. I never thought that they were the next "Beatles" but I liked a lot of their songs and "Nevermind" is one of those albums that damn near everybody has. I won't go too much into Cobain's death here as my feelings on the circumstances will conflict with the general consensus and I'll ramble too long about it anyway.
I do wonder what Kurt Cobain would be up to if he were still with us. Would he still be plauged by addictions and end up like Layne Staley and Scott Weiland or would he remain productive land continue to make music like Chris Cornell, Eddie Vedder and Dave Grohl.

I'm impartial to Nirvana, but a tragedy is a tragedy. I've never really enjoyed seeing such talent in the music world die so young.
If it's anybody who should've been dead it's that damn... thing Kurt called a wife.

Ahh...so that's why MTV2 has had all of this Nirvana stuff on today...
Well I don't really like rock and I'm not too familiar with Nirvana, but that's sad when anyone commits suicide... :(

truly the tragedy of a generation.. that truly set itself apart from that which came before.
or which has come since.
cherish life, my friends. even though it is getting harder than ever, ever before.. to cherish anything in our ever-more paranoid world.

"Sliver" is my favorite Nirvana video. A shame the only time I get to see it is when MTV is discussing how important the life and death of Kurt Cobain was. I'd take it over another Linkin Park video any day.
It's weird, I've only been a Nirvana fan since 2000, but it feels like so much longer. I will still accost random people on the street for not owning In Utero.

I was only 5 when Kurt committed suicide. I still wish he didn't commit suicide. :(

It's very sad. I love Cobain. And hate Courtney with passion. I never liked her, and never will. . . .

Agreed.
I'm a Nirvana fan, so this day has some symbolism for me. Sometimes I wonder what would happen if this didn't happen. *sighs* =(

I hadn't realized it was yesterday. I guess maybe that's why the Canadian channel CityTV was playing the documentary Kurt and Courtney last night.
When it happened, I didn't know too much about the band, other than having heard a few songs. Of course, it was very sad that someone took their life, but it didn't mean too much more to me than that. Looking back, I realize how enormously influencial the band was, and you can only wonder what kinds of things they'd be doing now, much like with many rock stars/bands who've died way too soon.

Actually, I have a feeling Kurt couldn't have shot himself. In a couple of medical examiners' reports, it shows that Kurt had 3-5 times the lethal dose, and after you have ingested that much, your body just shuts down. Its just a theory, but its interesting.
I was never a fan on Nirvana, or of Kurt, but it is real depressing to celebrate the 10th anniversary of an American icon.

Not to mention the lack of fingerprints on the gun.

And the fact that his credit card was used days after his death.

And the inconsistent handwritting on the suicide note.

Wether you think it was suicide or not, give this stuff a look at. It might make you reconsider your views on this. I know it did for me.
About every time since Friday whenever I tuned in to MTV Satellite Radio (XM), they were doing a special called "Nirvanna 10 Years Later," which was a musical timeline of Nirvanna and insights from the band and those influenced by the group. It's really good. (XM Radio will do a complete remembrance of Nirvanna on 3 of their stations. Complete schedule of specials (http://xmradio.com/programming/xm_feature.jsp?ch=9&id=397))
I really have no clue if his death was a suicide or murder and don't care, it sucks to have Kurt Cobain gone. He is among greats now (Jimmi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, and all other artists who died at the age of 27)
EDIT: Confused Morrisons; Jim's dead, Van's still alive. Thanks.

Uh... Vyse, Van Morrison is still with us. Jim Morrision is the one who's dead.
I still know what you mean.:D
