That is sad. They are airing it more often in full frame for the 2% of the nation that really cares. Don't they realize the majority of viewers wouldn't have a problem with the widescreen? It's that kind of bias that keeps full frame versions in circulation.

Oh come on, you guys are pushing widescreen a bit too far...This thing is being broadcast on television where the majority still has standard Televisions, what do you expect them to show more of? I for one am very happy that they're taking this approach, though I do with they wouldn't wait so long in the week to actually show it in Widescreen though, as that WILL be the one I'm recording.

Why do most people feel that you have to have a widescreen television to enjoy widescreen? I remember when I got my first laserdisc player (way back when I was 15) and white the black bars were jarring at first, I soon started to enjoy them. Widescreen's been around WAY before we even thought of widescreen televisions. People that need a widescreen TV to enjoy widescreen simply obsess about the black bars too much.

it doesn't matter to me that it's widescreen or full frame..but, more than likely, I'll watch the eps on monday, and record the widescreen ones on sunday.. :)

My wife is one of the 2% that really cares about the black bars on the top and bottom. I've tried educating her and I've had a bit of luck on that front. If Dini, Timm and Co. made a decision to go for widescreen, it might be the catalyst to finally get people to understand what it's all about. For widescreen applications to finally be accepted will take a lot of filmmakers to stick to their guns. Here's to Sunday night JLA!

One of the positive things about widescreen being widely accepted is that some movies that are visually composed for easy transfer to full screen will become a thing of the past. There's nothing more aggrivating than watching a movie shot in 2.35 that doesn't take full advantage of the frame because of pre-ordained statutes from the studio about framing and composition.

You know, I thought Paul Dini wasn't involved with JL. Am I wrong?

I'm just happy (and grateful) that they are doing it in a non-full frame format at all. CN is very cool that way. Can you imagine KWB giving the go-ahead to a widescreen JL?

KWB would never show any widescreen animated feature. They think that kids don't like it, hence the constant full frame "family" DVDs they keep releasing.

That's odd, since most kids I hear in the video store actually get on their parents for NOT liking widescreen. In fact, I think that more kids than parents perfer widescreen!

Kids'WB thinks that kids don't like the widescreen. Maybe they do, amybe they don't. I know my neice doesn't mind it at times. But this is KWB logic which never makes sense.

I just wonder how it is you can get to be so far up on the corporate ladder and get paid good money to know what people think and still not know what people think! I mean, I think the average person on this board could do a better job at marketing WB's family movies than WB does!

I think a chimp could! Their trailers for their animated fair are ridiculous. Mask of the Phantasm and Iron Giant are great examples of their inability to advertise to kids. Notice that their trailers are always in full frame, too? I don't recall one widescreen animated trailer...

Gak...am I wrong about Paul Dini not being involved with JLA?

Also: there is an interesting reader column up right now at http://dvd.ign.com regarding widescreen vs. pan and scan. Interesting to say the least...

Paul Dini won't be involved with JL at all. He may write an episode or two, but that wil be the extent. He's currently working on a ZATANNA comic book which will hit in 2002, as well as some books for ONI PRESS and his JINGLE BELLE website/creation/comic.

Unless Warner Animation's policies on widescreen have changed, you're only seeing the whole movie when it's shown full screen. Like in Batman Mask of the Phantasm, watching the widescreen version is like watching the full screen version with the top and bottom chopped off. I read that on these boards first about a year ago, checked it out for myself, and found that it was true. So are they producing widescreen animation, or just chopping off the top and bottom? I guess we'll see!

In the case of Mask of the Phantasm, the film is MEANT for widescreen. Yes, you could remove the black bars and see more area, but the movie was composed for the 1.85 ratio. Watching the movie full frame, you're seeing more than you were INTENDED to see, and this destroys the visual composition of the movie. This is called Open Matte. Instead of doing a pan and scan transfer, they just open the top and bottom and destroy the composition of the movie. So, basically, the extra area you're seeing when you watch it full frame is MEANT to be chopped off.
