View Full Version : The Crackpot Quail
In this cartoon, the razzing noises made by the quail were replaced with a whistle. Does the original sound exist?

Actually, I believe the razzing noise was only made once on the original print, by Willoughby when he's describing to the quail what a quail should sound like. Avery's gag that follows -- with the quail using his hands to show a shaply figure while whistling the sound a quail makes -- is pretty senseless if the quail was supposed to be making the razzing sound, and you can also see the animated spittle coming out of Willoughby's mouth and right into the quail's face in that scene. In all the other scenes, it appears as if blowing air is being animated when either character puckers up, which would go with a whistling sound.
As for whether it exists, AFAIK, an original audio track has never shown up, and since the cartoon as seen today was never re-released as a Blue Ribbon (as opposed to the BR audio dub out of Carole Lombard on "A Wild Hare", for example), unless some private collector has the original copy in his possession, the odd are against it

From what I've heard, the original soundtrack to The Crackpot Quail does exist. It was going to be released as such on GAOLT 5, as well as Book Revue with the original titles. That's what Thad told me, but I don't know why those two didn't show up on that set.

That whistling is EXACTLY what a quail sounds like! That's the first thing I noticed when I first saw that one. I was impressed!
