I just bought 'How To Draw manga: Male Characters" which has really improved my drawing skills I think.

Here is a pic I drew before I had the book, its not half bad, but the newer ones are much better.

The vertical Line on his waste isnt where his stomach starts, its just a muscle, so nah I havent done his waste too skinny :P
Have I done his back wing correctly? I wasnt sure if I should have had it sticking out, or pushed back like that.

What you think?

Nice work Wolfman, there's a cute n winsome quality to the face of the first character you drew (pre-book) that I really like, maybe you could try redesigning him at some point?

There's definite improvement here already which is great to see. With your angel pic its a question of perspective and thinking how the structure of the wings work, at present they look very 2D /side view which is why they contrast with his pose so much. There are threads dealing with perspective in the workshop forum also SilverKnight has recently done a drawing of a gargoyle/winged demon in her thread here in this forum so check that out to see what I'm trying to say about the structure of the wing.

Altogether though this is really encouraging, check on practising, I'm looking forward to seeing some more soon :)

Very nice work, and how you made with most of the designs, including the Samurai one too with that neat Standing posture, I hope you will become one good artist with those designs if you get the time. :)

Man, I want that book! And I also want 'Techniques for Drawing Female Characters,' but even though they most likely wouldn't I'm afraid my parents would get the wrong idea when they see the cover, and it's only available on the internet T_T

nice work wolfman! i definitely see an improvement with proportions and detail.

those manga books are helpful, i have the "illustrating battles" book, and it helps me draw some good fight scenes. there are a lot of those books covering the shelves at borders.

I think that the wings are slightly twisted in the angle. They appear to be folded back, but if you consider where his spine his they are too off to his left - they need to be more central and the perspective slightly altered -his rightwing is a little too far over.

But that's my only comment - I'm glad to see self improvement books like this are having a positive effect over numerous stylistic approaches! Good on you! You certainly seem to be pushing yourself in a very positive direction!

I wouldn't put too much trust into a "how to draw <insert style>" books. They'll often show you shortcuts to good drawings, and if there's ONE thing I know about art, it's that there are NO shortcuts to good drawings :) Only a long study of perspective, anatomy, storytelling (this one comes with experience), lighting, life and figure drawing -etc- will help you improve as an artist.

These drawings show some strengths and some weaknesses. One of the major weaknesses I see is the anatomy, which is very wrong in the arm, chest and shoulder areas (in pictures 2 and 5, mostly). You need to work on that, how the muscles move, how they are all part of a whole. That's why the character's pose in the fifth image seems somewhat strange. Pay more attention to the spinal column, which is vital for any figure drawing. Position it better and then position the wings, the shoulders and the chest according to the column.

Hope this helps! :)
