My 9-year-old nephew Joe posed this question to me last evening and I thought I would ask it here on the board:

What is your favorite 'blackface' gag? It can come from any cartoon of your choice.

Mine is the end gag from "Fresh Hare", which is now unfortunately cut for TV broadcast.

Runner-up: the 'Tom as Stepin Fetchit' from "Mouse Cleaning".

"Fresh Hare", if only because Warners does edit it, is as good as any...

2 Tex Avery cartoons are my choices...

1) In "Happy Go Nutty", after the apple disguised as a bomb explodes in Meathead's face ("Uh oh. He done it again!").

2) In "Henpecked Hoboes", Junior blows George up in his own trap. George is upset by this (He says, in a much deeper and raspier voice than before, "OKay, Junior. Bend ovuh!").

Whoops! I meant to say, "the BOMB disguised as an APPLE". Sorry, folks, my wits aren't quite with me tonight....:D

My favorite is from "I Taw A Putty Tat" when a disguised Sylvester gets dynamited by Tweety and goes from a Sweedish maid's voice to Blanc's Eddie "Rochester" Anderson impersonation. Always gets a big laugh from the audience when it's shown uncut in the theater.

How about the blackface from "Droopy's Good Deed"? That one cracks me up... ("Fifty five, seventy, nine billion, trillion, and two bits!")

I was thinking of the other one. "Hey Blackie, any more babes in there?" Though that one doesn't include the blackface-speech, I always loved that one.

I'm partial to the blackface double-gag in Tex Avery's MAGICAL MAESTRO...brilliantly timed and executed.

Also, the "Uh-oh! Tattle-tale gray!" end gag from Clampett's JEEPERS CREEPERS, and the aforementioned "Hey blackie, any more babes in there" gag from DROOPY'S GOOD DEED. How I'd love to be able to see the uncut "Fifty-five, seventy, nine billion trillion, and two bits" sequence from that cartoon, beyond still pictures.

mine would have to be Magical Maestro. To me that one fit the most because of him doing other cultural songs.

Yeah. Here's a link to a page about censored Disney cartoons. You'll find several info on edited blackface gags in them:

The scene with Cornel Shuffle playing banjo in blackface. 100% drop dead funny!

I would say that my favorite blackface gag in a cartoon goes to the 1935 "Silly Symphonies" cartoon....BROKEN TOYS

Now this cartoon does air on "INK & PAINT CLUB" the short is a little over 8 minutes long but with all the editing it's reduced to a 5 mintue cartoon. The reason for it contains a toy of "STEPIN FECHIT", who appears throughout the cartoon.Stepin is very funny in the cartoon even in the part where the toy sailor is giving a cute doll some eyes to finally see.And Stepit is the one that is giving her oxygen and is just too lazy and has to keep pumping the tank.

It really is enjoyable cartoon to watch when it's the original uncut version instead of the censored version.

I think the one that makes me laugh out loud everytime I see it is the one in "Mouse In The House" where Tom and Butch look into the gas stove and Jerry drops the match in.

Plus, Bogart's cigar-smoking at the end of "Bacall To Arms"....

Lastly, in "Mother Goose Goes Hollywood" after Katherine Hepburn gets hit in the face with a pie...

"I've lost my sheep-" *SPLAT!*....."Is any of you all folks see ma sheep anywheres?"

(wiping a tear from my eye) Hilarious!! :D
