View Full Version : What does your avatar say about your personality?

After considering putting this as a tangent post in our regular avatar thread, I felt that was the thread where we talk about our current avatars, and comment on each other's avatars, but I wanted this one to be a tad different, as it would include discussion about avatars of the past, as well.

In an off topic tangent on the Smallville Rocks thread on the JL board, we talked a bit about how our avatars match our personalities, and how some posters think of the poster looking like their avatar (GREAT! You all think I look like a female poet now! Grrrreeeeaaaatt....), and I think that is true to a certain extent. Now, I know that we don't look like the people we put up in our avatars, but I do feel that what we chose as an avatar says quite a bit about who we are as individuals.

I tend to pick alot of avatars that match my personality, and I think the one that I felt closes to was my Nitz avatar, which was one that probably survived longer than some others I used (I even toyed around with keeping it as a permanent avatar, as some posters have done with theirs). But even tho I change mine on a fairly regular basis, I think all of them reflect my personality in some way, and most of them touch upon my likes and dislikes and most of them touch upon my intrests in art and music. And perhaps if we could lay all our avatars out as a whole, we could see a better picture of the person behind the avatar.

So what do you think your avatar(s) say(s) about you?

Well, for you calhoun I think of you as the guy with the baseball cap (nitz?). I don't know why. My avatar right know means, I like gundam, nothing more.

I know. Even though I have no idea what you look like, I thought that you were Nitz! Probably due to the fact that his expression always seemed to match your posts/comments...I dunno...

As for me, well I've always been a struggling artist, constantly erasing and re-doing my artwork untill I get it right. And then there's the self-titled movie, which I've always praised since it proved that films dont ALWAYS have to be the same. Plus, I do have a few things in common with Henry:
We both don't talk much.
We both rely on transportation by our feet.
We both have the same favorite colors, black & white.
We both have weird dreams (thanks to Melatonin)
We both have a fear of meeting other people (especially if its my girlfiends parents)
We both have a tendency to stay sane in our bedrooms...No matter how bored or restless we get.
Probably the only difference is that he's got a head full of hair and I dont.

As for the Avatar, that shot right there, has always been one of my most favorite movie images.

Ooh...neat topic. Yes, I think our avatars describe us; it's certainly popping up in my mind for somone like Calhoun07 as a serious, calm guy. Sorta like most of his avatars; not screaming for attention, but nice, serious, to the point.

My avatar....describes me well. I'm rather klutzy and shortsighted in life. I'm simplistic as well. Plus, we aren't the best looking things around. :D

Ah, but at least I make people laugh...just like this little guy did.

Given my avatar, I hope not a lot. :) I hadn't really thought about that before. I hope I don't come across like Azrael in my posts. I don't, do I?

I chose the Azbats avatar, because I feel he's a misunderstood character, one that hasn't had a chance to live up to his potential because of the weight of what occurred during Knightquest. I liked a lot of what I saw of him during Knightfall, particularly the brilliance he demonstrated in tracking down Bane.

I haven't had any other avatars, so I'm not sure what that says about my personality. Actually, I haven't been sure what program to use to crop pictures to avatar size, which is basically why I haven't changed it at all. Any suggestions? What's the easiest way to create an avatar?

It says that I have a lot of ego :D

Seriously, my avatar doesn't say anything. It IS me. It's a self-portrait, after all (Though not a very accurate one :D)

Well, your avatar is a look into what you like, and of course that is a reflection of your personality.

My current avatar is pretty obvious, especiallly since I have labeled it "Paranoid Cat" My old Bullwinkle one said something about my sense of humor. I think a lot of the time I make dumb Bullwinkle-esque comments to friends, maybe not as much lately but I used to do that a lot. My only other avatar was Capt. America, whose comic I liked to read when I was younger. I think that I like him because he has a strong sense of what's right and wrong, and is a guy with minimal super-powers trying to make a difference. It kind of makes sense that I'd be drawn to Marvel's Boy Scout since I was a Boy Scout myself. Maybe not the stereotypical, always-do-what's-right Boy Scout, but one nonetheless. And I do have a strong sense of what's right and wrong like Cap, although some of those things that I think are right could be questioned by others. ( For one thing, is revenge on someone for something bad they did to you necessarily wrong? Under certain circumstances, I think not. )

Oh, my ego's definitely in play. The Utena Shadow Girls were the Greek chorus and gossip-mongers of the show, starting every appearance with "Have you heard? Have you heard?" They're the part of me that just can't resist passing along rumors or putting in my two cents and then some.

Also they're also wacky and odd and quite possibly aliens. . .

Ok, well I've now changed my avatar for the first time and am feeling quite proud of myself. But the program I used isn't exactly the greatest. Anything free I can download that's easy to create avatars with?

LOL!

This is just my 2nd avatar. Both are from albums I like, the 1st was a 3 eyed guy from Tool's Aenima and this is a space guy from Failure's Fantastic Planet. I've never really thought about them representing my personality, I've just been trying to look for something that looks cool. Besides, I can be pretty much all over the place so I'd prolly need to keep changing my avatar nonstop to keep up with my personality.

DA, I use Microsoft Photo Editor, I think it comes standard on Windows systems. It's not the greatest, it's really barebones actually, but it's pretty simple to use. You might want to try it, but there's prolly programs out there that's much better that I just dont know of.

based on my avatar, what do y'all think of me?

Frozen
10-18-2001, 04:17 AM
Now that is a good question...

Ok, well, it's a no brainer that I love Mr Freeze, so that's why I almost always have a Mr Freeze avatar (apart from when I'm in a themed Avatar contest!), but the real question has to be "Why do I like Mr Freeze so much?"

Maybe I just like bald blue guys!!!

The Mad Hatter
10-18-2001, 09:43 AM
My current avatar? Not a heck of a lot... I'm not a cat, and I'm pretty darned healthy.

But I guess it fits into my general theme of whimsey and non sequiturs, which is a large part of who I am... hence "The Mad Hatter."

Bird Boy

my current avatar says:

I love Return of the Joker and it's creepy sceens..:D

hehe. I just choose my avatars cuz they have Robin in them..never have any real meaning..

Joe Tully:
{I}s revenge on someone for something bad they did to you necessarily wrong? Under certain circumstances, I think not.
Well, in the Bible, it says "eye for an eye"--meaning if someone kills your brother, you go and kill their brother, and everything is even. Or you figure out how much money your brother is worth and demand that amount from them as reparation. Not being the most Bible-thumping person, I'm more inclined to say if someone hurts you, crush them ten times over, otherwise they'll pick themselves up and get you again. I do believe in vengeance, but strictly as a matter of honor. Honor, of course, isn't always pretty and clean.
Avatars do show a person's interests, although few of us probably have avvys that look like us. Well, my first one was a little bearded man with glasses, which I had a few weeks before I changed it to Darth Vader...and I had Wolverine up for about 10 days, which I was proud of because I'd looked everywhere for a good little pic of my favorite X-Man.
So this week I'm "exploring my feminine side"--which is going fairly well, except the other day I chanced to make a crass comment (cf. the Dice quote in my sig) and she smacked me.... ;)

I'd say that it says that I'm a big "Kids in the Hall" fan (blatant plug: If you haven't already, visit my thread "The Kids in the Hall"!), and that sometimes, I feel a little silly.

Kal-el
10-18-2001, 12:47 PM
Well, based on the name and avatar, I hope it's obvious that I'm a big fan of Superman. The ideals he stands for, the hope, the justice...all things I try my best to emulate.
Personality-wise, he's always been a bit of an outsider, from his arrival on earth throughout his life. I. too, have felt like that most of my life. I can identify with that.
There always seems to be an anger or wish to break out of the shell of conformity and the limits that society sets for us. Finding an avatar that shows Superman angry, violent, uncompromising...it felt like the perfect example for me (and a good example of how I'd like to see Superman portrayed once and awhile...to show his, ah, human side if you will).
Kinda deep stuff there, but don't worry. No need for boots (not that kind of deep stuff).

Maxie Zeus
10-18-2001, 12:55 PM
My Zeus avatars say nothing about my personality, though my choice of username probably says a great deal about my "god" complex. :D

The current pencil sketch avatar may say something about me, though. . . . (that's a tease).

I have no such qualms. I don't look to vengence as it is far too time consuming and way too much effort and I don't think I as a person get anything out of it. Nice line about honor (or honour as we say to the right of the Atlantic. Not much for honor either. The code I try to live by if we look towards biblical references is to try to treat others as you'd expect to be treated. I'm not religious in anyway but that to me seems a good code to live by and one which doesn't specifically persecute anyones specific code or methods to living their life.. :D

Do unto others...

Which as ethics go reflects nothing on any of my avatars. Mine are purely superficial, normally just a representation of what I like or whom I admire at the time. The only point I will make about my avatars is that I try to avoid obvious ones - I keep away from Batman images and try to offer something just a little different (although nothing horrendously different - I'm not the first to have a he-man avatar on the board and I doubt I'll be the last!!)

:)

10-18-2001, 06:02 PM
Well, I guess my avatar says a couple of things about me... I do like to sing, and I do like cats...and I do have to put up with a dumb but endearing big dog... and my personality is *sort of* like Rita's... maybe there's more to it than I thought! :D

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but i actually just picture the avatar as the person writing the post. I don't really bother to put too much thought into symbolic personifying themes, or anything.

I still haven't changed mine from the SW avatar contest. But i kinda like this one. I just go for pics i like and think look cool. My old Optimal Optimus one and my current are both defining pics of their characters, not mine, imo. But i guess that shows something about me. That i like good pics:p

Basically..I used Akio from the Utena series. He was sort of a "utena world" description of the devil, or an evil force of some how..and yet he's clouded behind this good-guy look. Everyone is sort of..attracted to him...(any Utena fans will get that..)..But ultimately he has an agenda..and it aint good.

Anyway..sometimes I "joke" about being an inner evil surrounded by a good-guy form.

Then, I blacked in his skin, to make his form look like a shadow. I do sometimes as a character trademark for a lot of my characters.

That's the story of me...

Really? I thought it was a screenshot, since the "blacking out" device is used in the show so often. I have a shadow-Utena around here somewhere. . .

Incidentally, what does the name "tomoe" mean? I thought it translated into something beautiful--like Sakura means "apple blossom"--but I've been told it's nothing but a punctuation mark. Weird. Sort of like naming one's daughter "comma" or "period"....

Yeah, There are a lot of pictures of the Student Council, with just their faces blacked out. There are screenshots of Anthy & Utena. And the only shadowed-in face of Akio I could find was of him as "dios"(well..their..sort of the same guy....). So, I finally just decided to take an Akio pic & do it myself! So much hard work..

LOL! Another Kids In The Hall freak!!!!! YES!!! Thos Canucks are uniquely hilarious in EVERY episode!! Love it love it. Do we like coincidences? Kevin MacDonnald is my favorite Kid in the Hall too. My favorite Skit aside from of course the Simon Milligan ones is The Waiter With Stumps For Hands. LOL! GREAT stuff! :)

And I really love Kal-El's avatar even more than I used to, if that's even possible. Just plain awesome, and I like his views on Superman's character. :)

I don't totally see myself as Nightwing, but there are quite a few ways we are the same. But all in all, it's just a picture of me doing what I do the most. Typing away and whatever job I'm on at the moment. :)

Any other avatars you see will just be shots I want people to associate me with for whatever reasons, while at the same time being a cool pic. Like that dork Gotham PD guy who saluted Terry in ROTJ.

Huh... I don't know:p All i meant was that i see the whole picture as the person posting. I just recongize the pic as the essence of the individual. I probably didn't make sence there...

Example: When i see your Unhappy Girl, i think, "hey, that's Cal!" And when i see my Darth and Luke, i think, "hey, that's optimal!" I don't know, i guess i'm just weird:D

And in describing my own avatar as a reflection of my character, i just meant that i like seeing high emotions and heroism in my avatars. So i guess i try and be as Maximal and Jedi like as possible, but i chose these because i just like the pics:p

That makes perfect sense! I am that way too, which is always a little bit disorienting when I see similar Robin avatars or similar Superman avatars. I guess that's why I try to to for unique avatars nobody else would touch with a ten foot pole!

TuffyCatt

Yep, I'm exactly the same way...when someone changes their avatar, I always get confused for a little while before I realize who it is...:p

Anyway, I've tried to stick with a cat avatar theme (except for Chewbacca for the SW avatar contest...at least he was furry :p ). I love cats...and that's the only real reason I think I have cat avatars. If I come up with a deep philosophical reason about how it matches my personality, I'll be sure to let you all know! :p

Calhoun07
10-20-2001, 04:44 PM
It doesn't have to be deep or philosophical! You liking cats alone says something about your personality!

For now, I like my avatar to be original, that's why I have a halloween avatar with Zits. Even though I can't name one favorite cartoon, Zits is one of them, so I try to keep that theme.
