It was brought up briefly in another thread, but I thought I'd spin the topic off into it's own, since we could add more to this thread as each week we get a new episode.
What did you notice in foreshadowing that Clark Kent would become Superman? The obvious one was the painted red "S" on his chest, and then there was the shot of him in a red "cape" kind of garment after he rescued Lex. Can anybody think of any others?

Why was there a red "S" on his chest again? I forget...

Oh yeah - DUH! I'm hoping to see alot of injokes this year on the show. I'm pretty sure we'll see small injokes in newsbroadcasts and stuff. I betcha alotta money we'll here a reference (at least once) to Gotham City.

There was also Lex's Metropolis license plate on his car, which foreshadows Clark's future home.
And somebody mentioned in another thread that some of the students had red s's on their jackets that resembled Superman's logo. I missed that one. It stood for Smallville.

I liked how they were setting up the moral lessons Clark had to learn to become the good ole' boy scout Superman. Here I'm thinking of Clark's dad making him give up the truck Lex gave for saving his life.

Don't forget toward the beginning (i think it was the beginning?) or wherever
there was a newpaper...they did mention "the fastest man alive" in the headline...
hint hint...and i'm sure there was some other stuff buried in that wall of the blonde girl
(who i found very annoying for some reason)...but hey clark does need friends...

Lana: "So which are you, Clark? Man or Superman?"
* * * * * * *
Lex: "Do you believe a man can fly?"
Clark: "Sure, in a plane."
Lex: "That's not what I meant."
Clark: "People can't fly, Lex."
* * * * * * * *
Lex: "I don't want anything to stand in the way of our friendship."
* * * * * * * *
Also, the headline on the paper that Lionel Luthor is reading at the beginning says something about the president of Queen Industries being missing, that's a reference to Oliver "Green Arrow" Queen.

I thought that was pretty intersting what Lex said about his out of body experience while in the water. It made kinda wonder for a bit if he could see Clark saving him. Alot of people who report experiences like that say later on that they could see the doctors or whoever was over their bodies saving them. It could go back to what we were talking about in the Smallville Rocks thread, about Clark's secret identity and it seems that it might not be so secret with Lex in this show, but that perhaps Lex's debt to Clark will allow him to keep it a secret. And a more interesting arch enemy than any previous versions of Lex we had seen.

Smallville High's logo is a red "S" on a yellow shield. Similar to the Superman logo.

I did notice a number of things that were either foreshadowing Clark's future or paying homage to past incarnations of Superman.
The Daily Planet that Lex's father was reading in the beginning had the daily planet name and logo almost exaclty the way it was in the first Superman movie.
The aformentioned "S" on Clark's chest, the red blanket draped over his shoulders, the Metropolis license plate, reference to the Metropolis football team...
I thought the scene in the cemetary when Clark was standing directly in front of a statue of an angel with outstretched wings...very symbolic IMO. The silhouette it produced looked very cool.
Lana asking Clark was he man or superman...blatent foreshadowing but appreciated nonetheless.
The foreshadowing and symbolism are some of the big things that have me excited about the series. Picking those out will be exciting.

Don't forget Lex asking Clark if he believes that man can fly. That goes back to the advertising campaign for the Superman movie. "This summer, you will believe a man can fly."

Aside from the lines we got to hear (which of course I'm sure we all listened for while watching, knowing us Superman fans :)) the only thing I noticed was the Smallville patch on the school's sweter. I thought that was a real nice touch.

Oh, man! That one about the president of Queen Industries being missing is too rich! I very, very much hope we can look forward to plenty of injokes crossing the DC Universe in the future of Smallville! :D :D :D

There were two foreshadowings in tonight's episode I picked up on. Well...kinda three.
Floating over the bed was obvious.
The talk about how his powers could never save Lana's parents seemed to foreshadow a time in Clark's life where he does realize he has this power (he saves Lois by turning back time in Superman the movie)
and the iron, while not an out right foreshadowing, seemed to make Clark realize more of his strengths and weaknesses.
There was one more I can't think of now. It escapes me...

Well, there was the whole Fortress of Solitude thing, but that was painfully obvious and I'm not really sure if it would be condsidered foreshadowing or not.:)

Oh, yeah, that was the one I was trying to remember! It was so obvious, I forgot it!

Lets not count the superman movies at all.
I dont think yoou can say this show forshadows any
events in the Superman movies.
First : because the superman movies should count as
a pleasant diversion and not the "real" superman.
The whole flying around the world till it moves in reverse
is ridiculous. Superman does not have the ability to travel
through time.
Isnt this man powerfull enough allready?
Hes the son of Jor- el not the son of GOD for heavens sake.
If anything, just for the sake of drama make Clark weaker not
more powerfull.
Second: doesnt this series allready dispute the smallville
of the Superman Film universe? Isnt it obvious this is a
different universe altogether. So their is no foreshadowing
into the Superman movies... unless you think Lex is gonna
suddenly age an additional 20 years suddenly and become
Gene Hackman as well.

Is it necessary to have a blatant foreshadowing moment every episode ? The red towel in the pilot - very cool ...subtle.
Dad calls the barn my fortress of solitude ...excuse me while I hurl.
