Tokyo — A Japanese company unveiled a prototype of a human-shaped walking robot Tuesday it said will be mass-produced for sale at the equivalent of $6,165 (Canadian) by the end of the year.
Tokyo-based ZMP, which has so far only made robots for research and rental, expects to sell about 3,000 of the new Nuvo model, which will be manufactured by another company. The manufacturer and sales network have not yet been decided, ZMP president Hisashi Taniguchi said at a Tokyo hall.
Unfortunately this sounds too expensive for the common man to afford.

it looks to puny to actually do anything besides bringing me my beer. even then i'll have to bend over in order to pick it up. unless they make the robots at least 100 feet tall and develop them so they can shoot over 100 different types of lasers, NO SALE!

From the headline I was expecting something like Data from Star Trek: TNG or something along those lines.
The minute I saw the image, I laughed.

The shirt & tie may be kinda cheap, but for $6grand, they certainly do the face and hair pretty realistically. ::crickets::
EDIT: Darnit, humanoid typhoon, why didn't I see your post?!
I gotta say, I was imaging some dopey looking android type robot. I wasn't expecting an 18-20" size metal robot. I suppose by humanoid, they mean, two legs & two arms from a torso, feet, that sorta thing.
To be honest, when [sony?] finally got the gyros just right not too long ago, I was expecting to see the production of humanoid robots start to take a more realistic role in engineering.
Why do I love robots so much? And why would you make an awesome robot like ED-209, and not enable him for stairs?!?!?

What!?! You are joking, right?
Sorry, I just can't tell, but it seems like you seriouly believe this president of just around 3 years is responsible for the fact that Japan has for decades had research in robotics, and we haven't.

Sorry for misunderstanding you, Bubblegum Girl. It's my crazy knee-jerk-reactionary tendancies kicking in. oops.
Hoo-ah!! 500 posts. Whee. Only took me a year and a half. I'd like to think that I'm all about quality as opposed to quantity. Okay, maybe not. But I'd like to think it all the same. :D

when they get really, really humanoid in 10 years, can we order one, and remote control it to drive around and run errands for us, and see through their own eyes?

The Pusher robot I am making will shove around the blind people and take them to the store. Then the Shover robot will push bread into their throats.

my posts are numerous.
where they all are, nobody knows.
I'd take a Qrio (http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/QRIO/) over this any day of the week.

You know I one time watched this show on HBO where they showed these really realistic looking sex dolls. Supposedly, they even feel like real people. Now, if the people who made sex dolls got together with the people who made robots then they just might be able to make a realistic looking android.
