View Full Version : The Kids in the Hall!

First off, I've hit 200 posts! Yay for me! :)
Second, I'm celebrating with a new avatar: Sir Simon Milligan of The Pit of Ultimate Darkness, one of the skits on "The Kids in the Hall" and one of the funnier ones, IMO.
For those not in the know, "The Kids in the Hall" was a popular sketch comedy show that ran on CBC, HBO and CBS (late night) from 1989-1995. The kids (Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson) started out as a comedy troupe from Canada. IIRC, SNL producer Lorne Michaels approached them about doing a show. They said yes, and the rest is history. What makes "The Kids in the Hall" (or KITH) so successful, IMO, is not only that they didn't rely heavily on reccuring characters (the ones they had were terrific), but that, like "Monty Python's Flying Circus", they so thoroughly embraced the absurd. They'd seem to think nothing of having a lech pitied by women because of his cabbage head, or having an inexperienced cannibal on trial. If you're confused, I advise you (if possible) to check out KITH reruns weekdays at 2:00 on Comedy Central. So, do we have any other KITH fans at the board?

Yup, I am definitely a big fan. Yeah, I think that a lot of the reason why I like them is because they don't depend on the old formulas but go off and do different things, like you said when you compared them to Monty Python. KITH sketches often don't really have much of a punchline, it's often the premise itself that is amusing, which is sort of unique. Ex: Mr. Heavyfoot is about a guy with heavy feet. I tend to prefer jokes like that, where it doesn't necessarily go "premise leading up to punchline, punchline makes you laugh", I think that often that can be too predictable. You can often see where the premise is going. I suppose a lot of sketch comedy is kind of like that though...I mean, they try to make you laugh as the sketch is going along. But with KITH it works better because the premise is often absurd and unpredictable, and so you laugh because it is something you wouldn't expect and haven't seen before (Ex: an interior decorator puts a demon in your closet.)

Yeah, I enjoyed their stuff. Some was a little poor - but that can be said about most sketch shows....
Some great lines...!
Nice avatar, too!

KITH is a hilarious show, and there are alot of characters that Dave Foley does that are gust busting. A couple of my favorite sketches involve Foley being an axe murderer who goes to his victim's neighbour's house to get a new axe, since he broke his other one. Another sketch (in which he portrays another killer) is his running out of a house covered inb lood washing himself in a hose and having to explain the blood to passerbys. He just pulls those off so perfectly.
Plus the KITH hall movie, BRAIN CANDY, was hilarious!

Brain Candy is a movie I'd be very interested in seeing. Ad far as I am aware, UK is currently a KITH free zone so the chances of the movie being shown or even a re run of the TV show seems unlikely... sigh!

I've tried watching the show, but I can never get into it. Just leaves me cold, scratching my head (same with Space Ghost). I guess I'm more of a Monty Python man. "Oh, [expletive deleted]! It's Mr. Creosote!" Ha. Funny.

I love Kids in the Hall! I watch the reruns on and off when I get a chance to. It somehow got much funnier after I was able to tell the guys apart. I particularly appreciate the more random stuff, such as the spontaneous dance numbers or the celebration of Scott's 100th role as a waiter.
And Simon is nothing without Manservant Hecubus!

I haven't seen nearly enough of KITH, given how much I like it. Unfortunately it runs (or ran) on Comedy Central, which is NOT one of my favorite networks.

Well, why don't you put up an avatar of him.
What, you say you want to be Hecubus but refuse to put up an avatar of him?

Fantastic show. Some of the really good skits were funny, but without trying to be - they were the sort of things that happen in real life. Ever see Dave loan Mahogany to Kevin and try to get it back? I've been Dave's character there. Or the depressingly realistic police:
GUY: You PIG! Stupid PIG! I smell BACON! Look at me, oink, oink! I'm a BIG PIG, a BIG PIG.... (Exits.)
COP 1: You could have done something.
COP 2: Oh. I thought you knew him. (Takes out billy club and follows GUY.)
I can't tell you how tempting it is to crush people's heads and tell them about it.
Oooh, avatars.
I'm crushing your head! I'm crushing your head! I crushed your head! Ha ha ha!

I love the show, but doesn't anyone else find the fact that they play women so well a little disturbing?:p

Are you saying Bugs Bunny didn't play women convincingly?

Only in Dave Foley's case. There was one skit where I couldn't tell he WAS a guy for a few minutes until he started talking.
I find the Chicken Lady a heck of a lot more disturbing. Buddy Cole too, at first, but then he kinda grew on me.
Anyone remember the marching-band killer?

Well, they didn't look much like women. It's no secret that some of them were gay, but they all made ugly women.
My favorite sketch was where he drew the guy without looking at him. He drew some first grader looking sketch, but when the guy came out from behind the curtian it looked just like him. Spiked hair, big buck teeth and everything.

No arguments that they made ugly women. Of course, that's most likely what they were going for, maybe following the Kevin Smith "Jersey Girl" rule:p

I love KITH. One of my favorite shows, I make sure to never miss it on CC :D What I like most about it is that its just so off the wall so much. I've never been a big fan of Saturday Night Live, although Ilove some of the more 'out there' ones like KITH and Upright Citizens Brigade (cancelled a long time ago from CC if I remember correctly -_-)
As for my personal faves:
The one where Scott is a druggie searching for pot. He eventually tracks down a house where a lot of weird stuff is going on and makes a deal with the devil which turns his hair into pot
The one where Bruce is a scientist performing all these bizarre experiments on Mark.
The one where Dave has a bunch of monkeys locked up in the closet and keeps threatening to set them free.
The one where Danny Husk(the businessman with the mustache that Scott plays) has his armpit odor turned into colone.
And of course, the all time best skit ever on the show... the one where Bruce plays a guy at a sausage factory with a crazy old man living with him(played so well by Scott) that demands he brings him more sausages. This is one that has to be seen to be believed. Its so crazy and out there, yet so ridiculously funny.
(Sorry for resurrecting the old topic, but its better than making a new one, don't ya think? :p )

I'd never heard of Kids in the Hall until I heard that Kevin McDonald from Invader ZIM was on it. I haven't seen much of the series yet...

I love KITH! what are the odds that this thread was put up now, because they are touring, doing a live show, and they are in Dallas for a show tomorrow (4/26/2002), AND I GOT TICKETS!!!!! I CANT WAIT!!! YAY!!! my favs are Dave Foley and Mark McKinney. im so excited! :D
I'm a big fan of KITH too but I don't see it too much since of it's timeslot. But whenever I have off I always make sure to watch it. Some of the sketches are really out there (espacially when they showed Chicken Lady's childhood) but usually that makes it better and more original.

I didn't know Kevin is in ZIM. I do know he plays a villain in Lilo and Stitch.

I'm a longtime fan of The Kids in The Hall, but it seems to me that Comedy Central only shows, maybe, five episodes over and over. Where the hell is the rest of it? They should just cycle them in chronolgical order.

I'm a HUGE fan of Kids in the Hall! (in fact, I'm watching it right now). I think my two favorite sketches are the "Scene Written In Haste" and the one with the married couple arguing about the salty ham.

Two of my favorites are:
The Middle of a Sketch: The dog mayor gets me every time!
and..
The Barber episode.. you know... where whoever is getting their hair cut has to tell a story! "And he had... he had a Boojum Head!"

Top show. Scott was my favourite - along (as I'm sure I've mentioned previously) with Kevin's pit of (pen)ultimate terror.
Did occasionally let the sketches drag out too long, but that is a fault of most sketch shows. That was a team that always worked well togeather.
Nice to see the thread pop back to!
Does anyone want to recommend Brain Candy? I've heard mixed reviews...

Thanks, Lonestarr! Hecubus and Milligan were always two of my favorite returning characters, so it's only fitting... :D
I'm very much looking forward to the imminent release of Brain Candy on DVD. I've never seen it...

I just saw KITH live last night, and I was laughing so hard I was crying at the same time. Kind of Lil' J, but I'll get out of that.
I absolutely love Dave Foley. Hecubus rules! And Gavin the neurotic little boy has always been a favorite.
Teacher: If Jimmy Pritchard jumped off a bridge, would you do it, too?
Gavin: Yes...we have a suicide pact.

I WAS THERE TOO! cool. i loved the Dr. Seuss Bible sketch! the only thing that pissed me off was all the jerks yelling crap out during sketches like the Buddy Cole monologe. I still had a damn good time.! I had so much fun, i will remember it for a long time. (im glad they did a chicken lady sketch. )

Yeah, I couldn't stand those guys yelling stuff out. It was quite annoying.
The Dr. Seuss Bible sketch rocked! Even though it was first, it was my very favorite!

I guess they are still touring. I know that I saw them live about a year/year-and-a-half ago, but I thought it was just a reunion type thing. Dave was always my favorite, but my favorite sketch was always that kid that was played by Bruce McCullough, esp. the one where Mark McKinney was the guy painting the chair.

Well then I believe a trip to the UK might be in order for the Kids... :)
