View Full Version : So I Finally Got Pulled Over

Yeah, doing 72 in a 55 on my way home from one of my worst nights at work...ever. I was half asleep though (that's why I was going so fast, as well as the reason I didn't see him).
To make things more fun, the cops showed up at my door yesterday afternoon and said they traced a threatening phone call back to my house. Turns out the call was made to my friend's mom, and I can only assume that I called in very close proximity of the threat (when I first called my friend, I got a busy signal, so I waited and then tried again).
Fun fun. I was just wondering if anyone here had any stories to tell.

Police stories suck, because you have to remember being bent over by the Po-Po...
but I do have one that didn't get me a ticket. I was leaving Denny's (everybody knows Denny's right?) late at night, at the time I lived about a mile or two away so it was a quick trip home down a major street and then a side road, both of which had 45 mph speed limits.
So when I turned out of Denny's I floored it, which is not saying much, becuase the car I was driving was an '85 Plymouth Caravelle, but because of a dip in the road, I ended up spinning my tires alittle. Well I guess the cop was looking for speeders and my tires got his attention, as well as how fast I took off down the road, so he followed me.
I made it about a mile and halfway down the side street before he caught up to me and hit his lights, but like I said the speed limit was 45mph and that's what I was doing, so I was wondering what was going on, but I stopped (of course).
Him: "You were going pretty fast back there, son. You in a hurry?"
Me: "Not really, just trying to get home."
Him: "You always drive that fast?"
Me: "What, 45? That's the speed limit isn't it?" (by this point I knew he didn't even have me on radar, or he'd have known I wasn't speeding, and I got kind of pissed)
Him: "Well I had to go almost 70 to catch up to you..."
Me: "Well... wouldn't you have had to go faster than me to catch up with me?"
Him: "Well- that's not the point- uhh, you were still going pretty fast. Just don't do it again." (or something like this, I forget)
at this point instead of arguing I let him give me his 'warning' and I took off, pissed as hell. This is the only time I can recall ever coming out on top of a police encounter, which is not even correct, because all I was doing was driving the speed limit, albeit accellerating very quickly up to the speed limit, but still not breaking any laws, so all I really did was succede in not getting a ticket for doing nothing, which you can hardly call coming out on top I guess.
Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I've had run ins with the cops since I was...um....I think the first time was when i was 9, maybe 10, and I did NOTHING wrong! Generally every time I run into cops I think "cops" is too nice. I much prefer the nomenclature "pigs".
Actually it's only the cops in my hometown and ohio who are pigs, I totally respect the officers of maryland, southern virginia, west virginia, and michigan. You guys rule!
Here's a cool story I guess. So me and some pals were driving down a road late at night, going the speed limit, but we saw the headlights behind us. So we all know: the cops are back there, don't speed. So we are doing fine, but they decide to pull us over. So we are pulled over and the cop comes by and says, "how you all doing tonight, we saw you guys swerving a bit". So my friend, in all her brilliance says, "well we got nervous, we thought you were a cop". At which point we were all asked to exit the vehicle so he could search it. Now it was really cold, and we couldn't put our hands in our pockets and the search took FOREVER. Well the car was a mess. Like, two years of use as a trash can and storage kind of mess. So we had to watch as the cop sorted through all the crap. It was actually kind of funny. At one point we asked the guy if he would mind taking a trash bag and cleaning the car out as long as he was going through it all. Well of course, nothing was found on us and we were all sober, so they let us go.
The police can be fun sometimes.

My parents once got into a pretty big car accident simply because the driver (a friend of theirs, who was appently tired) fell alseep for a couple of seconds, just enough to crash the car against the side of the road.
Sorry, no cop stories to report yet ;)

Police department as cleaning service huh?... I like this idea :p

My brother rolled his car by falling asleep at the wheel. He's okay.
I think motocycle cops are the worse. when I got pulled over, he yelled at me for going 70 in a 60. stupid cop

But did he give you a ticket? You're a girl. It would surprise me if he did. Almost all my female friends have been able to "girl" their way out of multiple tickets with male cops.
Me? I have an inherent distrust of the police. I'll pay the taxes, they do their job, I try my best to follow the laws, they leave me alone. That's the arrangement I prefer.

I've had two encounters since I learned to drive.
1) Car accident. Cop was a real jerk and probably treated me rotten because I was a teen and that's obviously bad
2) Car battery died (I think, can't remember what the problem was - something about the wires). Two cops helped push my car into a parking lot and called a tow truck for me.

No, don't worry. Not half asleep as in danger of falling asleep. I meant just beat and on auto-pilot.
But yeah, only getting a warning ticket was my second lucky break. My first was back in December when my brake line snapped in stop-n-go traffic. I bumped the guy in front of me (his bumper cracked; no damage to my car) but didn't get a ticket because I couldn't control that and I arranged the tow truck myself. The cop said if he arranged it, he'd have to write a report, and if he did that, then he'd have to cite me. So, he patched me through to my Gma, and she took it from there. Cop drove me to the college (I wa already late for an exam).

man, you did get lucky... no matter what happens, the cop is supposed to write a report, unless it's on private property like a parking lot or something. Even if there's not damage, or minimal damage, a report is supposed to be required for insurance purposes... I guess the guy with the cracked bumper didn't object?

I was working late, and I got this phone call from my daughter. I heard a sniffle, and then she sort of wailed, "I got my first ticket!" All she could think of was, her insurance rates were going up (I'm paying it anyway, but it's nice she was concerned) I said, are you okay? What did you do? She said she was going 65 in a 45 MPH zone, but the officer just put it down as 55, since it was her first offense and it is a new road that a lot of people think has a higher speed limit than it does. She's never been in trouble, always someone to take pride in, so this was a very jarring experience for her.
Oh, but it got better. She went to court, and I went along with her for moral support. After listening to the number of people without insurance, open containers, DUI, without licenses, and more and more candidates for the Group W bench, she turned to me and said, "You won't have to worry about me, any more. I'll never speed again, not if it means getting thrown in with a crowd like this." She went up to the judge, pled guilty, paid her own fine, and got the hell out of there. She said if ever there was a learning experience, that was it.
Isn't it odd, but I'm proud of her for getting a ticket, if it means that.

I guess the guy with the cracked bumper didn't object? The officer only filled out insurance forms, which was what me and the other guy were supposed to do, anyway, so he saved us the trouble. Here in FL, he only has to write a report if there's $500+ in damage, which there was not (he didn't even write an estimate on the forms). But calling a tow truck would mean actually getting involved (again, he didn't have to do those forms for us), and that would require a report. That's what I gathered from the forms and what the insurance company said, anyway. I don't know. But yeah, I was very lucky. And the other guy had left by then, as his car was still safe to drive.

Back in January I was pulled over for the first time. I went 68 in a 55 area. :( What I don't understand is where the cops are when people are going 80 in a 55 area! Now I know they can't be everywhere at once (if they were this would be like "1984"), but think about it.
And to make it worse, it was in one of my parents' cars when I was visiting them from college. I hoped to keep it a secret, and I paid it myself and have nothing left to owe, but apparently they found out the other day. Since when did the lawyers find our info?

Question to all: So how much are speeding tickets in your area?
Here it's now $10 for every mile over the speed limit.

In at least four of the continental states the the policy is as follows:
$5 for every mile over the limit up to 10, and $10 for every mile over after that. So if you go 20 mph over you pay $50 for the first ten and $100 for the ten after that. So the whole ticket is $150.

I have a joke, but that'll come later. I know a few stories but all of them end in some one being really mad and fliping out after the cop leaves!

I got pulled over for a busted headlight a few nights ago. No ticket, but I had a few minutes of panic when I couldn't find my insurance papers.
I've been pulled numerous times. Sometimes, since I work as a reporter the cops have known me and let me go, even for breaking actual traffic laws like running red lights (on Main Street), stop signs (at least two in a row) and speeding. I don't think they'd do that in the county I live in now, though. I also drive more carefully.
I've only been ticketed once, for speeding in another county. I was going so fast I was just a couple MPH from violating Kentucky's reckless driving law, and I think he only clocked me at that speed because I started slowing as soon as I saw him. That was an expensive ($200 + and traffic school) mistake. They even suspended my license for a while because my traffic school notice was sent to my old address and I didn't go.

Only story I have was a case of Grand Theft at my high school where someone stole about 50gb of RAM out of the Macs in both graphics labs. I was one of the first suspects, because they went after everyone that knew anything about computers. Didn't help that I had prior record for "hacking" the school's piece of crap NetWare server.
Got pulled out of class by two cops and interviewed for about half an hour regarding the situation. Nothing ever came of it.

When I was working at the Computer Center of the School I used to go to, I got called to fix a computer in the library that wasn't booting. When I got there, sure enough, it wasnt booting, so I opened it up, and lo and behold, no HD...
now they all have locks on them

Yeah, the Einstein handling the graphics labs didn't lock any of 'em, and the actual theft went unnoticed for about a month. Only after he got sick of hearing everyone complain on and on about how slow the computers seemed (he always assumed we were pro-PC nuts that would harp on endlessly about how Macs suck; I was the only one :P) he bothered to take a look for himself and found that each one only had about 32MB of actual memory left in the system, and each system was rigged with a 2GB pagefile to hide the theft.
Because the systems weren't locked to begin with, the school's insurance provider refused to pay up.

Well, isn't this a timely addition to this thread... I just got pulled over for the first time on Wednesday night, and, lo and behold, got my first speeding ticket. I was doing 43 in a 30 (honestly I thought I was under 40, but the cop said otherwise)... it was 2 AM and no one else was on the road, so I guess I wasn't paying that close of attention to my speed.
My dad said I should go to court and explain that it's my first offense, and that I thought I was under 40, and hope that I can get it reduced... has anyone had any success with getting a ticket reduced at their court date? What should I do/say? I'm really nervous.

I didn't bother going to court for my ticket (failure to stop at a stop sign), but my brother (The king, apparently, of speeding tickets) says you can, if it's your first time (he got his fine reduced)... When he got his fourth, I think, he had to appear before the same judge... and that wasn't too happy at all.
