I'm sure this topic has been brought up before, but I couldn't find a recent thread so I thought I'd ask around.
Anyone know of any series which were laugh-out-loud funny? I'm not looking for something like Excel Saga, but more situational comedy (sitcom). Any suggestions?

I don't watch many down-to-earth anime, but Love Hina might float your boat.

there is one anime that has all three things that makes a good anime: action, romance and of course, comedy. and the one i'm speaking of is of course the legendary "Rurouni Kenshin"!!! that show is the greatest! so if you are interested they are showing it on saturdays on cartoon network at 11:00 and also at 12:00 is .hack//sign! also there is the knights of the zodiac at 12:30. well i hope you find a hilarious anime out there! :anime:

Dragon-Half is a classic, but I didn't think it was that funny.
Ebichu had me rolling on the floor laughing my frickin' butt off though, it's one of Gainax's greatest works, EVER!
For fanservice, skip Love Hina and go for "Golden Boy" (although I also Love Hina, just not as laugh-out hilarious as Golden Boy).
For sheer craziness, try "Goldfish Warning!" and "Blazing Transfer Student" (another Gainax gem).
And three anime with the greatest-sounding names ever: "Bite me! Chameleon" and the rolls-right-off-your-tongue "Butt Attack Punisher Girl Gotaman" and "Amazing Mister Masaru: Sexy Commando Side Story!"
Seriously, they make South Park and Beavis and Butthead look like Sesame Street by comparison...
Edit: Oops, I didn't read that part where you wanted "sitcom-funny". I never thought sitcoms were that funny in the first place, but if you're looking for that type of humour in anime, there's Kare Kano (another Gainax work) and Kodomo no Omacha, and what the guy said below me, GTO.

If you are not offended easily, GTO is really laugh out loud hilarious.

If you're the easily-offended type, forget what I said earlier, cauze if you find GTO offensive, you'll definitely squirm in your seats when you see Ebichu or other anime like Butt Attack Punisher Girl Gotaman and Sexy Commando Side Story...

Thanks for the suggestions.
I've already seen some of the more popular series (Love Hina and Kenshin) and have been thinking about GTO for some time. I'll have to look into the other series...

Azumanga Daioh is just freaking hilarious, if you can deal with the fact that the episodes are mostly collections of shorts. "I bet Sakaki is sucking the height outta Chiyo-chan!"

Nice to see another Bonta-Kun :anime:
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi. It's similar to Excel Saga, but I found it funnier.

Yeah, I definitely agree with Azumanga. Other titles that haven't been mentioned yet:
Urusei Yatsura
Jungle Wa Itsumo Hare Nochi Guu (if you can handle the idea that the title character is a girl who has a freaky world in her stomach)

Pokemon, particulary in its native Japanese, is very funny! Not only is it good clean fun for all ages, but Team Rocket's Musashi, Kojiro, and Nyarth have incredible chemistry. Since the animation is done around the voices, it's so much better than the English version, since you have do basically act like the Japanese voice actor as best you can, which can be difficult.
So, once again, if you can, Japanese Pokemon. English episodes are fine, too, but you won't know what you're missing. :)
Another reason why shows in their original language are better than their dubbed counterparts. *Shudders at the Japanese Simpsons*

Speaking of Pokemon, I strongly advise to the person who created this thread to avoid Seasons 3-6 of the show like the freaking plauge, unless you want hours of your life wasted on unorginal, unfunny drivel.
Secondly, Excel Saga owns, and Love Hina is only good with the Manga sadly.
Tenchi is also pretty damn funny, (except "Tenchi in Tokyo")

Don't forget Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku. No one does comedy like Takahashi-sensei.

Everyone makes Johto sound like SARS. It's not that boring! In fact, I think it's pretty damn good! Wait, that doesn't sound very convincing, coming from a Pokemon fanboy. Well, if I was a casual Pokemon viewer, I would still like Johto. Every show has its stinkers, and Johto does happen to have quite a few, but that's because it went on for three years. Trust me, things get even better than Kanto when Hoenn starts.

ABC Family's "Tokyo Pig" was the funniest cartoon (anime, American, or otherwise) that I have ever seen. Many episodes of Pokemon are hilarious as well. Sailor Moon can be pretty funny too, as well as Kirby.

I second the Pokemon suggestion.
I also have to suggest Gokudo - a highly under-rated 26 episode fantasy series that basically copies off The Slayers yet comes off much much funnier. The jokes of the English dub aren't all that great, so if you're not into subtitles you might want to stay away. Otherwise, I highly recommend it. I think CPM* has a boxset of it out now, too.
Edit: Uh... yeah... as Nobuyuki sama points out up ahead, Mediablasters owns the rights in the US, not CPM.

You're right, The Hoen season is the return to the original style that made the first seasons godly, it made me a fan of the show again, but my god, it took THREE YEARS for me to like it again, how did you cope with that?

Of course Lupin is always good for some laughs. Crayon Shinchan, Dirty Pair, and City Hunter also have some good chuckles now and then.
It's more of a parody than a sitcom, but the funniest anime I've ever seen is Yattaman (one of many shows in the long running Time Bokan series). It's a great send-up of the classic "hero" shows like Gatchaman (Battle of the Planets) or Power Rangers. Think Superfriends only the writers are actually trying to be funny.

Hehe, being a fanboy, I stick with Pokemon through thick and thin. :D
I'm so happy to hear you're a fan again! So many people on many of the Pokemon boards I visit are returning fans from Kanto and Orange Islands!
IT'S SO GREAT TO SEE PEOPLE RETURN TO THE POKEMON WORLD! It's been so lonely throughout Johto, but everyone's coming back!*Tears of joy like Pedro from Excel Saga*
Speaking of Excel Saga, I totally suggest it.

I was going to recommend Gokudo, but it looks like you beat me to it. I have the full series and I watched the dub for it and loved it. Gokudo is one of those "badass" characters who is obnoxious, rude, and selfish - and his only goals in life are fame, wealth, and babes. :D The characters that join him in his travels are a lot of fun as well.
This review (http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/disc_reviews/2.php) of the first DVD should help you decide whether you'd like to try it. Also, here's a quote about the series from another review I read (it was for a later disc in the series, so I won't post the link and spoil it for you):
"Simultaneously smarter and trashier than Slayers, Gokudo should appeal to fans of Slayers as well as fans of self-referential, satirical anime such as Excel Saga and the original Project A-Ko."

The dragonball series. Althougth some of it is sex humor, there also some normal humor in it too. The humor in the db series is something you wont fine in other animes. And despice it being a dark drama series, cowboy bebop has some funny eps too. Cowboy funk comes to mind.:anime:

Fruits Basket~ Though beware of the occasional (but very sad) dramatic moments. (not that I don't love the dramatic moments..>_>)
You may also like Jungle wa Itsumo Guu, though the humor can be rather crazy at times~
Also Azumanga Daioh (but I bet you've seen it before, and the manga is much much much more funny that the anime).

Dirty Pair
Dragonball - I believe the more perverted stuff was cut out of the anime but the manga is the funniest and most perverted I've ever read
Love Hina
Lupin III - only seen a portion of one eps but it was enough :D
Naruto
Ranma 1/2
Sandland
Tenchi Muyo! - pure harem fun
Trigun - same as Lupin
Yu Yu Hakusho can be pretty funny at times
And I'm sure FLCL is hilarious too, but I haven't seen too much of it.

Duel Masters- Tokyo Pig with small ads
Tokyo Pig- parody of everything in general
Ultimate Muscle- funny parody of Ultraman
Shaman King gets funnier and funnier as it moves on, specially episode 30.
And the humor in Pokemon increases in like a 75% if you're watching the spanish-dubbed version.

Funny from the get go...
Love Hina, Ranma 1/2, One Piece, Shaman King, Naruto, Tenchi Muyo, Excel Saga, Puni Puni Poemi, Lupin the 3rd, and FLCL.
Funny because of their dubs...
Samurai Pizza Cats and Duel Masters (the new Samurai Pizza Cats)

You forgot.....Knights of the Zodiac, apparently not to be confused with Saint Seiya.
Ultimate Muscle- funny parody of Ultraman
Better yet, see if you can find, anywhere, a copy of Kinnikuman (it's from the 80s, so most people arn't familiar with it). it's a full-blown parody of American and Japanese superheros... complete with really offensive stereotypes!
Does anyone know if they ever released DVDs of this series...
If all else fails, find the first Dr.Slump series (from the 80s, the newer one isn't quite as good) See toriyama's pre-dragonball greatness!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned "Medabots". This season has been more dramatic than funny. However, the first season kept on setting up typical "Pokemon" situations, only to end it with a gag! I can't help but find a soft spot in my heart for a show that has its villains selling horrible home renovations as their latest scheme to take over the world....
How could everybody forget "Project A-Ko"? The "Bringing Up Baby" and "Airplane!" of anime.
"Irresponsible Captain Tylor" had its share of funny moments.
Of all the Tenchi series, I'd say "Magical Project S" is the most laugh-out-loud funny (though I haven't seen GPX yet). Close relation "Dual" had its funny moments as well. For series only-in-the-fan-subbed stage, I'd say "Red Hooded Cha Cha" and "Rizelmine" had some scream-out-loud-funny episodes ("Guu" too).
I have to agree "Tokyo Pig" and "Samauri Pizza Cats" have to be at the top of the list.
