Can this get a wide release in American theaters? PLEASE? I mean, if the mainstream can embrace the 70% animated Avatar, surely they could accept a fully animated sci-fi action film of the same visual quality!
Today, a little sunlight is shed on one of the more interesting announcements to come out of the recent Tokyo International Anime Fair.
More to the point, today's post is video where a life-size mecha destroys stuff just by showing up. Is it awesome? You don't have to ask. Check it out!

Those are some fairly impressive visuals, hopefully the actual movie turns out alright.

That was awesome and the CGI looks super impressive. I really hope this movie comes to American theaters.
I wonder if it's based on the original 1970s anime series:

or on the 2006 remake series: http://www.youtube.com/watchv=M4VNt2olbNQ
It could be a good movie.
My gripe though is whenever someone makes a CG robot they almost always load on too many parts.
I actually find it hard to look at.
And what is this “scanning technology” they speak of?

I've been trying to figure out Light Stage in detail myself. Apparently you can scan a real-life object or actor, digitize that, and then go to work. This older link from 07 briefly describes how it has been used in live-action:
According to this, meanwhile, it seems that its main use in Avatar was creating digital faces for all of the actors. It's an LED lighting array that basically lets you film actors on a stage, and then once you digitize the footage, adjust the lighting to mimic any possible environmental condition. So if you find you need to have a bright highlight on the right side of the actor's body, because they're about to be hit by a comet, you can do that. It has been used on 'Spider Man 3' and 'Superman Returns,' most recently.
I would suggest that it's not the medium, but the quality of perception and expression, that determines the significance of art. But what would a cartoonist know? -Bill Watterson
Gorgeous teaser. I haven't even seen the original. I must admit that for much of this I was thinking about how awesome a high-budget CGI Toonami movie would be.

There's enough commercials in the movies now anyway. No need to see a movie that is a commercial for some canceled TV shows, no matter how pretty the animation.

Thanks for the info.
I've been wondering for a while if they were using computer lighting in movies. I wasn't thinking Superman, but maybe it was just too well done to notice.

The point would be...? TOM only existed to promote cartoons. A Toonami movie would have as much point as that Cavemen TV series.

It's a character and universe that has developed a strong fanbase for over a decade, and it would be great to see them brought back for their own adventure.

Not...really.
Gaiking...wow, the Voltron movie is going to have to do a LOT to top this.
Not really. When most people reminisce about TOM, they generally think "Steve Blum was awesome" or "I liked the third character design" or "That Hamtaro intro was hilarious", not "Such wonderful storytelling and world building, I need to see a movie of his universe!"

The fact is I watched this trailer and, not knowing anything about Gaiking, thought "that reminds me of TOM, that would be cool to see him look that good" and posted that thought, not expecting to be attacked because of it.
