So it begs the question: How many differences are there between the novels and the TV series? Or are the novels completely original stories that the series didn't use?

According to Wiki, there are nine novels so far and there's a tenth book coming with an unknown release date. So, if I have this figured right, even after a season 2 of the Haruhi anime eventually happens there would be some unanimated material in the books. Not sure I'm devoted enough to double dip, though the paperbacks are bound to be discounted to super cheap levels.
