Last I heard they have to get to the end of the Grand Line to find One Piece and they keep getting side tracked along the way but mostly they've been progressing through the Grand Line.
I'm a big spoiler guy, but from what I know..uhm?
1) Have the Straw Hats even started looking for One Piece? or like what?
2) Alabasta, Skypiea, Enies Lobby, and Thriller Bark...
They're more or less the Straw Hats going off into some huge adventure, either saving a friend..or the world.
Its like Oda-Sensei has forgot about the main story in One Piece.
Luffy's quest to become the King of the Pirates and find 'One Piece'
Its like Dragonball really isn't it? Wasn't the original plot was to find the Dragonballs!? And they did..and what?
Geez..

Eh really?
Well I been thinking over it abit. Has One Piece popularity got to Oda's head?
Well I dunno.
I guess to defend my own fan-ism of One Piece, doesn't each quest and adventure have a maturing effect on Luffy?
cause if it really doesn't then what is the point of him being King of the pirates?

Well, if they GET to the end of the Grand Line and find One Piece, then One Piece would end. One Piece has gone on so long, the only decent way to end is Luffy getting One Piece and becoming King of the Pirates.
Not so fast. I actually think the perfect way to end the series would be for Shanks to find One Piece and then for Luffy to fight Shanks, beat him, and steal One Piece from him. It promotes the idea of pirates more than having him find it, and it also causes him to prove he's better than the man who he loved and decided to follow into the pirate world.

Beware The Almighty Hammer Gun!
Sketch is right. Plus Oda setting up Blackbread to a major villain. He probably be the last obstacle Luffy has the face before he gets to the One Piece. There is also Robin and the Polygraphs also, which I think is also part of the One Piece.
I'm a slob--get over it.
Fear my ignorance--I am a TAO, number two.

It's kind of like ET, if you take out all of the emotion and turn it into a silly webcomic that's updated on Tuesdays and Thursdays
One word: MacGuffin
Heck in the end we might find out the entire story has been told by Luffy while he hangs over a bottomless pit with one are hanging to a ledge and the other holding One Piece (which is so heavy he can't get back up) to a female pirate that has repelled down to him.
But that's the second worse ideal most of you have ever seen.
"Burning Man"? I think you mean "Burning Urethra" -- that place is a massive colony of venereal diseases being nurtured by their human servants. -zombie

They follow where the Log Pose points. They know they'll find One Piece eventually, so why not make an adventure out of the islands they visit while they're on their way? Besides, if they happen to get an Eternal Pose to Raftel, that'll make their quick and easy and we don't want it to be that easy, don't we?
But can he beat ghost/zombie/demon pirates?
But yeah, One Piece is nothing more than a MacGuffin. The series is about Luffy going from island to island and seeing his adventures, One Piece only serves as a plot device for him to do that.
If you want to say he's "milking it" then that's not inaccurate, he's stated before he originally only intended to series to last 5 years, but now we're on the 10th year. But if you enjoy it, I see no reason why that should be a problem, you can say the same about anything popular.
The thing is Oda's ability to tell time is that of a level you would expect Luffy to have.Spoiler:
Heck, two days ago he said in the next year something big was in store but we all know that means it won't happen for a quarter of a decade, right?![]()
