    Yugioh GX

    Like This Thread!
I was a huge Yugioh anime series fan but have only caught an episode here and there of GX. Does it have a good story and plot around the characters and card game? I see the dub is high in the episodes numbers, so im guessing the japanese version is going strong and still making episodes. Is it worth me watching being a fan of original?

The seasons do carry a plot through it:
    Season 1: The seven stars
Season 2: The organization of Light
    Season 3: Survival rounds then
    Spoiler:
    Dark World

There are times when you'll wonder what the heck the writers were thinking, but I guess that goes with every show.

Some original YGO fans enjoy it, while others absolutely loathe it. Supposedly, it's ending in a few months, though.

Personally, I think it's mediocre. Not following it at the moment, but I'll probably catch up some day with the DVDs.

Although I'm a Yu-gi-oh! dubbie (but at the same time, quite the huge fan), I LOVE GX. I can't wait for the arc after the battle with Viper to get here, because some cool stuff happens...Although I haven't seen it, it seems like the best YGO arc since Doma/Waking the Dragons (which remains my favorite).

I was really digging the series until they did the unthinkable...

    Spoiler:
They killed off Hell Kaizer Ryo! The A##holes!
Vote Hatake Kakashi for the next Hokage! Or he will MS you to the next dimension.

I don't care for the original version, but the dub makes it enjoyable with the jokes and character interactions. It's basically like an official version of YGO Abridged.

The thing about GX is that it had a great idea, a great concept, but then they turned the show into nothing but a long card commercial rather than a show like the original was. All of the characters except Judai seem to be background characters, with Asuka being there just for fanservice. Judai has never been given any development, he is just there and wants to be the king of duelists. That is it. We do not know what made him want to be a duelist, who is parents were, what his life was like. At least Manjyome was given development, which then they threw out the door shortly after turning him good by making him another background character.

The show's quality vary in episodes. For every good episode, you have about twenty bad ones, and about 5 really awful ones (like a dueling monkey and a tennis themed character). The second season started out interesting, then about 10 episodes in, it started going downhill and season 3 is meh so far. More useless characters have been introduced to substitute the current characters having their souls taken away at the moment.

Oh, and the show is going to have a 4th season, so don't believe anyone who says it is going to end in a few weeks.

Really? So will it be about Judai/Jaden after he graduates? That could be interesting.

Just read the Manga, the only gripe I have is that they use dub names, but otherwise it's well worth it because the Jūdai, for what screen time he's gotten, has been well used (like a flashback story to how he became a duelist) and also some pretty good character development for the other characters as well.

The first volume comes out this November!!!

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX is a travesty to Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters. The introductory episodes were drab and annoying while the Seven Stars arc has something to offer until the last two assassins. Everything onwards was just pathetic.

Agreed. Sorry to those that actually enjoy GX, but I personally can't stand it. To me it's just not Yu-Gi-Oh!. What I enjoyed about the original series were all the characters and the plot. While I did enjoy most of the duels in the series, I didn't find them as appealing to me as others might have.

Which is why the Manga version is so much better, at least, from what I've read. Jūdai doesn't get as much screentime and when he does, it's done very well.

Wow, the main character of the GX anime actually doesn't get as much screentime in the manga? I'm curious how that is done. Maybe I should look into it.

Well, from what I've read so far, he's been in every single duel, but the focus isn't on him (like in the first chapter it's mainly about the Professor he plays, the second and third are about Manjōme, then Misawa, then Asuka, then Shō, and now they're in the middle of a flashback depicting Jūdai's becoming a duelist and how he got his current deck).

That's what happens with EVERY frikin season. It goes good until some point where the writers collapse.

I definately see where you're coming from. Even though I do enjoy watching GX, and I do feel like it has been getting better since the end of the first season, it is no where near as good as the DM series. We don't know too much about any of the characters' backstories and not too many of them do much of anything, especially Alexis/Asuka. Compared to DM, GX does feel like it is more about the card game than telling a story, like the original did.

In terms of the seasons, I actually thought that they have been getting better since the start of season two. The first season had just too darn much focus on Jaden and hardly anyone else did anything. Plus, those were those filler episodes, like the two that you mentioned, that were pretty bad. Barely anyone else got a chance to duel during that season. I thought that they fixed that a bit in the second season by giving other characters some screen time and a few more duels than what most of them got in the first season. Besides that, I enjoyed Satrouious much more than any of the shadow riders. I only follow the dub of GX and from what I've seen of season three so far, it seems pretty interesting. But so far, season two has been my favorite season.

Whew... That is great news. From what I heard from some people who do watch the Japanese version, they said that it would feel so incomplete without a forth season. Luckily for me, they didn't give any spoilers away. But I'm definately happy with that.

Regarding the dub names, I think that Konami wanted Viz to keep the names like that so that people who watch the series wouldn't be confused with the different names. But that's just my guess.

The more I hear about this manga version, the more that I want to read it. Jaden/Judai not only getting a flashback about his past, but getting good character developement for the other characters at the same time. And he doesn't even have that much screen time like he does in the series. Sounds like a fun read to me. Too bad that it doesn't come out until November, but hopefully it will be worth the wait.

Well, you can pick up the latest issue of JUMP (the one with SS3 Gokū on it) it begins the Jūdai backstory.

Also, what really ticks me of is how Viz doesn't even bother to say 'so-and-so was originally known as so-and-so'.

Oh, well I don't know that for sure. But high school in Japan lasts three years, right? And this is Judai/Jaden's third year, correct?

I would, but I would rather start at the first chapter. I would probably enjoy the story more than way. Besides, I also have to save up money for some college related stuff.

I understand that. I could see that as honoring the characters' original names by just mentioning that before the chapter starts.
