So, the upcoming Death Note Special is a recap...
...a three hour one that is:
Death Note TV Special to be Three-Hour Director's Cut
The upcoming
Death Note special broadcast, which was announced during the last episode of the animated suspense television series, will be a three-hour
Death Note Director's Cut: Compete Ending Edition special that airs at 8:03 p.m. on August 31 on Japan's
NTV. It will mainly be a compilation of the confrontations between the vigilante Light and the detective L, re-edited from the perspective of Light's Shinigami (God of Death) Ryuk. All-new dialogue and soundtrack will be recorded, and scenes will have additional
animation that could not be included in the original series. Source:

I wonder if the epilogue will be included now.

I read this eariler today and it looks pretty cool, expecially since it'll be from Ryuk's view. Does this mean it'll be included on the DVD when it's released in the US?
Ohhh I can't wait. I love stuff like this.

Is this based off the so called Volume 13 that is a recap of everything staring Ryuk taht Shonen Jump just mentioned in the latest issue?
-
What has me interested is the timeslot: when's the last time an anime aired at 8pm in Japan?

One Piece, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX...

The Japanese equivalent of afternoon toons are usually later, because of afterschool activities and cram classes.

It is definitely rare. I can't recall any anime regularly being shown between 8 and 11PM, but off the top of my mind, certain times when Pokemon had a one hour special, the Naruto specials were shown from 8-9pm (7:59pm). Sometimes specials that start at 7pm or so continue through until 9pm. Even rarer is to see an anime on after 9pm but before late hours... only Lupin III's annual specials are seen then, as far as I know. Anyway, NTV obviously has a lot of faith in Death Note at a time when more animes are getting pushed off of primetime and will never reach that kind of potential viewership. Which is kinda ironic for a show that ran after midnight. (Well, in the past, a show being on after midnight would usually be a sign of being a fairly niche title. But nowadays, it seems just having a fixed episode count is enough to relegate a show to those hours, besides Saturday's 6pm slot).
It's no surprise to me that it's a "recap"... I'm not sure if this is even aimed at the audience who saw through the whole show already. We'll see, I guess...

I hope that it's a recap of the whole series, it very well should be. Death Note is a great show, and this is a pretty cool idea to keep Death Note going (For another episode
).
4/13: FREEDOM!

I hope they change the ending back to the way it was in the Manga...
...like that'll happen...

Ha. Death Note an "afternoon toon". The TV show aired in the middle of the night.
