A Wing-like series with better characterisation and balance could work well. It could certainly improve chances internationally. The feeling I'm getting is we'll be introduced to a pre-established team, with any needed backstory to be told in flashbacks. If we're lucky, any cliches will be swept up into Unicorn (not that that series doesn't have some nice ideas).
Yeah. We need to learn more, but with this idea of an private military group that makes it its job to intervene in conflicts they could take after Wing's schtick of a talented few against greater odds.

I like that we're already in uncharted territory though, since this is a private group the odds are that this definitely won't be a standard Gundam plot where fate puts the pilots on one side or the other and we watch it play out.

Just so long as they don't also take after Wing's schtick of a handful of invincible pilots and machines versus an army of incompetents.

One thing I am seeing is the issue of just what the main groups morals are. Is this a Serpent Tail-like mercs for hire or yet another "Let's all sit down and hug!" middle faction?

I wouldn't mind having a "for hire" group that works with the highest bidder. It would make for some pretty good plot down the line.

Moonphase has a few of the staff listed on the series...

Director = Mizushima Seiji (Rumored to be the director, now confirmed. The director of FMA)
Character Design = Kouga Yun (Not very well known, but her most recent work, and probably most well known, is 'Loveless')

The director of one of most critically & fan acclaimed series in the last couple of years.
    And Shonen Ai manga-ka.
    Hm.
    This could be interesting.

ANN gives us a some what summary from that trailer and short summary of the series:
"The main characters will be four Gundam Meister mobile weapon pilots in Solestal Being, "a private military organization bent on eradicating war." The Solestal Being intend to use Gundams to enforce its goal. The teaser trailer ends with the phrase, "Rebirth begins through destruction."

Promising promising promising. In regards to Riza's findings.

From the promo text, it seems like they're some form of Phantom Pain Lite of sorts, without the one-dimensional racist overtones. I hope.

Also, if you look hard enough his hair at the front is kind of like what Trowa's hair would be if it conformed to the laws of gravity.

But yeah, he sure comes off as a serious don't-mess-with-me type in that picture. For that matter, they all look like they mean business.

Wow, that trailer looks really good so far. While this might come to Toonami, let's not predict that already. Some shows people thought were locks for Toonami haven't happened so far(Sgt. Frog). Hopefully updates about the show will be given to us in a timely manner(*looks at SEED movie*).

Of course, the most important news is that we will have a 50+ Gundam thread here in the Fall.

I thought that characters looked straight out of Loveless (I actually mentioned this to deaf ears earlier in this thread), . . .

Still, from what little we know so far it looks good. I do think a mercenary-for-hire group would be interesting 'heroes' for the plot and they have to end up siding with one side. And the 'Rebirth begins with destruction' is vaguely Evangelion-ish. Hmm . . . this might be cool. And opens up the possibility of a Tomino-esque 'kill 'em all' at the end, too. The use of 'A.D' is interesting, too. I wonder if they're going to disregard Newtypes and Coordinators entirely and have only natural human beings, or perhaps cyborgs and that sort of thing, diving into harder sci-fi.

I bet Bandai's going to rush this one over like they did with Gundam SEED, which was brought over here before the anime was even finished in Japan. I bet Bandai's seeing cash signs in their eyes already, considering the reaction just hours after the news has been released. I bet Toonami and Adult Swim will be watching this series carefully when it begins airing in Japan.

Still, I hope they go to Texas or LA for the inevitable dub. Not that the Canadians have been doing a bad job, mind you, I'm just tired of hearing Brad Swaile and Matt Hill and company (this goes double for the Blue Water folks).

Thing is, Bandai have nothing in the pipeline dub wise and are trying to remarket as a game franchise. Whilst a US release wouldn't suprise me, I doubt Bandai are lining up for a massive US pitch. They claimed they are for SD Sangokuden, yet Bandai America has heard of no such plans.

It's alot more credible to have a team rather then one posterboy. From what little info we have, a group of Gundams is relevant because we're dealing with some sort of team. Should the show itself have Gundams out the yin yang, I may agree.

Then I hope to God this director is competant enough to balance things out.

Canada is pretty much the only English speaking market where Gundam has been successful, and having the dubs recorded in Vancouver and Calgary ensure that Gundam shows can be scheduled and replayed effectively due to Canadian content regulations. What would the point be of suddenly changing that?

I'll have to be honest... I'm not impressed by what I've seen so far. The fact that they're using the Loveless character designer and that we have yet to see a single female character for the show makes it pretty clear what direction this is going in. Not to mention that the Wing style cast format seems like a futile attempt to sell the show to US TV audiences, which is simply never going to happen.

Whether or not this is successful, I still hope Sunrise is open to the idea of doing another SEED series with a new cast sometime in the near future. This whole "third universe" thing just seems like too much to me.

^She looks feminine to me. Granted, we don't know for certain, but my money's on this person being a woman.

And you're assuming a lot in that the anime won't sell here. G Gundam and Gundam Wing both did. SEED and MSG didn't, admittedly. But I'm sure that Bandai's going to try nevertheless. Whether they get anywhere, that's a different story.

I said I'm hoping it's recorded elsewhere. I am not deluded enough to assume that it won't be dubbed in Canada. I'm just tired of hearing the same voices over and over. But my griping won't change the conclusion: Ocean or Blue Water will most likely be doing the dubbing.

That was mostly a comment in jest.

But I don't get your point. Fans of Wing are too old to contribute to success at this point. Someone who was 12 when Wing aired is now 19(and will be 20 or 21 when this comes over to the US).

They need a series that will attract the current audience, not the audience of 2000.

I'd like a series that is a success, but also one that is quality.

Cool. A new Gundam series. I look forward to checking it out. It'll be good to get some Gundam that isn't CE or UC. I hope Seiji (assuming he is the director) does a good job with it. The only other series I've seen done by him, aside from FMA is Dai-Guard. Which was fairly well done.

On a side note, I would seriously love a Gundam series done by Goro Taniguchi. That would be amazing.

One of the four pilots in the promo, looks like like it could very well be a female. Even so, I think jumping to such conclusions based of a 15 second promo is a little premature.

Ah, yes. That would flat out rock. Great idea for the next time they're launching a new Gundam series unconnected to a previous one.

Considering AS has said Gundam is more for Toonami, I doubt they will be looking into this show(unless it's more adult than we realize).

Well, then that might open up the possibility of another company getting the rights to the show instead of Bandai.
