Can CE Gundam go anywhere credible with further technology?

    Like This Thread!
One of the many complaints levelled against SEED Destiny is how quickly it burned through nearly a century's worth of UC technology in a fraction of the time. So the question is, where do future CE installments go from here technology wise? Is there a door for credible new ideas or have the writers trapped themselves into writing more and more ludicrous super mecha?

Hard to really say, they've in the end written themselves into a big corner by making those huge technology jumps. I mean, it wasn't that bad during the first part of Destiny, but once Strike Freedom was introduced, it was at that point that the technology was advancing way to fast.

Plus, if in a side story a Mobile Suit bears a striking resemblance to the V2 Gundam (which is vintage UC 0153) and it exists within the short space of time that the events of CE take place, then there's a problem.

Hey, they haven't rolled out the Turn-A technology yet...

Can it regrow lost mustache parts?

EDIT: As if Strike Freedom wasn't invincible enough already...

One thing I would have held back is beam shields. I mean, in SEED a big reason for stealing the GAT-X's was to get the beam technology. In just 3 years they've gone from it being a fairly new concept to a mastery of it. Then there's the DRAGOONs...

You'd think with all this we'd be seeing beam rifles/sabers for use by normal man...

Indeed. I mean the Mobius Zero's Gunbarrels were actually very plausible, and the DRAGOONs on Providence I didn't mind a whole lot. But when they're being used again to the degree that they were in Destiny (and by somebody like Kira), then there was a problem.

I think it's rather telling that they had to retcon why Shinn retreated during the battle at Orb. Clearly they were making it up as they went along.

Heh? The first time (when he fought SF) or the second time (when beaten by IJ)?

Originally, he had to retreat from power loss. Then they later said Destiny had a basically infinite nuclear derived engine. Hence, the SE's change why he retreated.

With the Artemis shield in SEED, I wasn't too surprised to see it minituarized in Destiny, although you'd think it be used on ships with bigger power sources first. Even the Dragoons of S-Freedom had some basis (though I think they're ugly bits of design work)

Akatsuki was really the one that went too far, especially when it got its own "bits"

At least 15 percent of the moviegoing audience experiences headache and eyestrain during 3-D movies. I'm one of them. And no, I don't need corrective eyewear.

I'm pretty sure the Umbrella of Artemis is different from a beam shield. Look at Hyperion, which utilised it and had a sent up similar to Wing's planet defensors with a series of linked projectors. A beam shield instead projects essentially a beam sheet which cuts off with no contact.

You're getting way too literal. The point is the precedence for a beam shield was already established.

No, it's seperate technology. A beam shield is not a blanket term.

Two words: beam protection. What was once cutting edge--beam weaponry--is quickly being countered as decisively as nuclear weapons once were by the N-Jammer.

Once a trait exclusive to the Archangel, the Destroy Gundam, Akatsuki Gundam, and various Earth Alliance mobile armors herald the inevitable slew of counters to beam weaponry and technology. Note how Destiny's most used and effective weapon was the sword followed by the hand attack, not the beam cannon or rifle. Half of that was Shinn's fighting style, the other half was due to the fact that using those things was a damn good idea. Akatsuki, easily the most powerful Cosmic Era Gundam to date in my view, took more damage from close quarter combat vs. Destiny than it did against a head-on attack from a warship.

Strike Freedom's put out there as the poster child for overpowered Gundams. But take away the impressive beam spam, and what is there? The beam saber and rifles that any mobile suit worth its salt has anyway? Freedom's design and outfitting was never as versatile as Nu's from the Universal Century, nor was it capable of mass destruction on the scale of what Destroy (which really was more of a mobile armor than a Gundam) or the Wing Gundam ZERO could do. The likes of Destiny and IJustice are the future with a more diverse arsenal and a bias toward close-quarter combat.

Basically, less is more. Every technological feat in CE seems fated to be outstripped by something else in fairly short order. What's important will be brute force and mobile suits that can strike decisively and quickly. IMO the next step would/should be advances in mobile suits proper, the emergence of newtypes, or psycho frame-esque advances that enhance what a pilot can accomplish.

Perhaps we could see a return of stealth tech, a Gundam comparable to Justice or Freedom but with the ability to move about undetected would be lethally powerful. On the other end of things mini-Destroys could be in our future--Gundams with heavy armor and protection, perhaps a good deal larger than the standard size, that are a threat but above all simply damn hard to kill.

Well, the CE-verse could develop a far more efficent cockpit for pilots to use, like those suits in G-Gundam.

Better yet, why not go alll the way to the orginal influence of Mobile Suits, Starship Troopers' Power Suits. Why build huge robots when you could try to produce a smaller version that dosn't take up as much resources or room?

More controversely, the Coordinators can take geneering to the next level. They still need to reach Augment-level of genetic engeeering, let alone Nitzcheian or Abh-levels. Human/animal hybrids might prove interesting in the Gundam-verse.

Maybe Gundam needs to branch out more technology wise. More orbital Ion cannons, and more efficent firearms.
It's sad that in the end, so much evil is done all in the name of 'Everyone Else is Doing It'.

I bet the next show brings in the flying space whales and they have to fight an alien empire with psychic powers. That'll solve the technology issue.
