Anime and nudity. The debate.

I've just noticed that the more anime I watch, the more I see that there doesn't seem to be as big a problem with showing nudity, as there is in the west. And I'm not talking about Hentai, or even sexual stuff, or "service" quite frankly I'm just talking about portrails of the human body. Perfect example is fantasy Shojo for this thread I'll use the example of the Magic Knight's Rayearth transformation sequance, nothing reall sensual about it at all, but they're naked.

Okay now to be relevant. I was sitting in my school's art club one day and watch episode 14 I believe of Eva (it's the one where the Angel infiltrates Nerv Headquarters) and some of my freind's kept on telling my instructure that I was watching porn, I assured her that I wasn't. But then came one of the scenes where they show the Eva pilots (Auska in particualr) sitting in the cockpit, and she was naked. Suddenly they made a big scene about how this was porn, and they kept on rewinding the scene over and over, yelling porn.

Another example would be the original Bubblegum Crisis, where someone told me that I shouldn't buy it because it had nudity in it, now the way they made it sound, it had a conotation similar to.

"Ohhh there's a pretty raunchy sec scene in that thing, man!!!"

Naturally this made my parents kind of cautious, and made me seem like the bad guy (now add to the fact that my sister, and mother harped on me for drawing a naked women when I was doing an anatomical study of the human form.)

I think I've admited this before, but I am a Christian and such overt displays of sensuality just don't suit me at all. Further added anyone who knows me knows that I'm not the kind of person who just lusts after every nice looking female I see (honestly I think I'm the only person who bought Dead or Alive 2 looking for a good fighter.)

Anyhow, have you guys had this happen to you?

I am torn in a debate like this because I hate anime, but I love nudity. Our society is too uptight about nudity. There should be a naked time. I am drafting a movie script about a modern-day heroine who fights evil legislations. It's called Naked Sex Party.

I just wonder how much nudity these people view in R rated movies and such? That are not porn, just movies with nudity in it. Why do people have such an adverse reaction to anime?

anime is in another world compared to western animation.
a lot of it is too sophisticated for the cow and chicken generation.

My disgust with anime has nothing to do with sophistication, I just think it's a real ugly way to animate stories. And a lot of the time, these "realistic" characters look totally unreal and indistinctive. You know how sometimes when you're sick, you have fevered dreams that make no sense, but you're still scared and distressed by what's happening? I think anime is kinda like that.

Take Tenchi Muyo for example. Ryoko is all sorts of Naked. But, she's never doing anything real sensual...drinking saki(SP?), or lathering up. Sure, it's a bit jiggly when she starts fighting naked(hehe), but its just nothing really.
Then again...its enough to make a parent spaz out.
Compare that to something like in Master of Mosquiton(one of my absolute favorites). It is not porn. Of the entire series, there are only 2 episodes with real nudity. And only one episode which can be concidered "fan service"(His wife comes to the shop....the other girl is in the bath...yeah). But, thats one episode.

I guess it varies from series.

I'm not exactly sure what the "debate" here is. Obviously nudity in anime isn't porn and usually isn't gratuitous, especially when compared to actual Hollywood R rated movies.

The Japanese are more mature about nudity and it isn't as big of a problem as people make it here...

Out of curiosity, how much anime contains male nudity?

With some exceptions-albeit FEW exceptions, male nudity is seen less than female nudity.

Which might as well be none, since most male charas outside of a hentai anime tend to be cut below the belt, if you know what I mean.


Speaking of hentai anime....what's the point of pixelating a teeeeeny tiny portion of the, erm, ritual if you can a) see EXACLY what they're doing and b) A G-string leaves less to the imagination than those pixel boxes.

...For the record, NO, I don't watch hentai on a regular basis-or at all, really. Just assumed this from Doujinshis and screenshots.

Here's a good tip:
Never, EVER watch the series Photon while a parent or signifigant other may be around.
Same thing with Jungle De Ikou.
And, no, these are not based on personal experiences.

John, of the "Ask John" columns at AnimeNation.com defines Fan Service this way:

"Fan service" refers to mild, exploitive titillation, such as the common cleavage shots in Evangelion, and the shower scenes that were a common staple of 80s anime OAVs. Nothing below the belt, unless it's hentai anime. There was an anime TV show that aired on UPN once, Teknoman, which had a male character who had to go into his armour suit naked. No genital shots, but there were a couple of scenes where he came out of the suit naked, and the female cast would blush if they happened to be around.


"Fan Service" gets more attention than it should. There is everyday fan service in most American live action shows as well as anime. Buffy skipping rope is fan service. Buffy with a low cut shirt is fan service. Baywatch is fan service.

You get the idea.

You're very right Larry dude, but you see the thing is that people seem to react diffrently when they see fan service in a cartoon, then when they do they think it's porn, even though they wouldn't call something like Dark Angel porn.

And make no mistake fan service isn't just for guys, I ask you to look at GundamW. What other argument do I need.

A good example of Fan Service would be Faye Valentine, from Cowboy Bebop. A notable episode, would be "Ballad of Fallen Angels". She's pretty...uhm..."jiggly" the entire series..but in this episode..sheesh! I think that much 'jiggly' is against the laws of physics...

Hehehe....arguement? Duo. I knew he was a guy the whole time, but way to many people think he's a girl. Hehe, and there's a funny story about that...there's this guy I know...he thought Duo was a girl. Infact, he had an interesting picture. He printed it off the computer. One day, he brought it in. He pointed to that "hot girl, kissing Heero". I waited about a week or two before telling him the truth. I just fear what he might have done with that picture...

To answer Deltamon's question, I believe that the law is they're not allowed to show pubic hair under any circumstances. This also applies to "adult" shows and movies. Now, I heard this a few years back, and they may have changed the law by now, but that's all I know on the subject, honest!
