Pretty Cure dub clips?! WHA.....

Ok, first off let me say that I don't know very much about Pretty Cure aside from the fact that it appears to be a massively popular mahou shojo (Magical Girl) anime in Japan. You have two girls that have been chosen to become Cure Black and Cure White and both are given the task of protecting the world from the darkness that is to consume the world.

Now here's the suspicious thing. Rumor has been circulating that an English dub is on the way. Don't believe me? Here are some clips:

As far as I can tell, this dub has gotten some pretty bad talkbacks. Changing of the music, subpar VAs, that kinda stuff. It's odd though that a dubbing company has yet to be named. Can anyone clear up the mystery behind these clips? Is this a real deal dub, or an elaborate hoax done by subpar fandubbers? And if it is real, then which company got the rights to it?

And if it isn't too much to ask, any feedback on this dub would be appreciated as well.

Ok, now that I think about it, it's like a TDA type clip, so I'll let it slide barring a Cease and Desist from whoever actually owns the show.

Meanwhile, I think it sounds bad, but they get points for not totally renaming everything and putting out atleast some money for the new music. Even if it was done by hooking up with some no-name Eastern European orchestra, that's still much more expensive than the usual session work music (not a reasonable alternative to licencing the original OST unless you're being totally stonewalled.) However, I'll admit that I'm now interested in checking out the actual though show. Toei did some nice animation on that and it looks like it's pretty light and fun magical girl stuff. Speaking of Toei though...

My company bets:

1. Toei - Handling just feels like them front to back except that...
2. 4kids - They don't have the money for an orchestra (well they do technically, but it's not their MO, and they are still sliding down in revenues, and they are still putting money into stock buy backs,) nor the interest in keeping a show that intact (definitely not their MO,) but there does seem to be some NY voice work (atleast that's what Sketch says) but there is a very slim chance that...
3. Some other NY studio - Even then, I couldn't imagine Right Stuf or Central Park doing that to a show. They know better, unlike Toei and 4kids. But they use same pool as 4kids.
4. Viz - One compound word: ZatchBell. If they can do a radical rework on Zatch, why not Cure? They've got the war chest to fly out VAs and pay for orchestras too, explaining the other possiblities.

Oh, and it could be a hoax. Plenty of canned orchestration lying around, plenty wack amateur VA work too, and it's not that hard or expensive to record cleanly at home (as evidenced by my home commentary for Sealab 2021.) Plus, it's out of an LJ that won't fess up to the source. It's definitely possible to fake up work with enough ambition.

I'm leaning towards 4kids for now. I'd LOVE to be wrong about that but I'll just brace myself for the worst at this point.

There are plenty of other possibilites and it could very well be a hoax. I haven't even seen a single episode of Pretty Cure but I'd rather not see another shoujo anime get hacked for US television. But my initial impression is that the dub work isn't bad. Sounds pretty typical honestly...

As for the NY talent I think I'm hearing... Sounds like Zoey from Mew Mew Power. That doesn't instantly mean it's 4kids work though, it could be another studio. But having my favorite anime ruined by 4kids has made me rather skeptical and cynical and I pretty much assume they're out to pick up anything that vastly popular somewhere in the world in order to localize it for viewers here.

The music feels tacked on despite it's quality... I'm not really sure what to think of it. If it weren't for the high quality music I would be dead certain it's a 4kids dub.

Anyway... I'm sure we'll know who has it soon enough. That is IF anyone has it.

"Wha?" is just about right. I knew Pre-cure was licenced in Germany but I wasn't aware of any German release...

...unless (and be glad to call me wrong on this) RTL (the holders of the german Pre-cure licence and current owners of Channel 5 in the uk) have gone and dubed this in house (with help with Toei) for Brittish viewing.

Hell, it's happened before with FIVE, any one rember Strange Dawn at the start of 2003?

If this is 4K!DS, then they must've just decided overnight to actually start putting some effort and quality into their dubs, because the voice directing actually seems good in those clips... and of course, the music, although replaced, is excellent stuff - nothing like the pure and utter untolerable crap 4K!DS has in all of their other shows.

And it's because of that that I find it hard to believe it is 4K!DS, but at the same time... 4K!DS has been the only ones willing to go for shoujo stuff in quite some time. I don't picture CN airing any shoujo series anytime soon, as they seem comfortable with Juniper Lee and Totally Spies (even Winx didn't last that long overall on CN), so that kinda' rules Viz out, and if Toei is doing it themselves... well, I don't think they have a strong relationship with any network (unless they're also handeling BoBoBo) so it's hard to say.

I'm confused... but if that is indeed 4K!DS, then they MAY be shaping themselves up a bit. I just hope whoever has it also has plans for an uncut subtitled release.

To 4kids credit... the voice direction in Mew Mew Power and DoReMi aren't bad at all. One Piece is really more of a black sheep in that respect.

I see nothing good from doing that. 4kids is like every other company when it comes to annoucements. They'll deny anything until they are ready to anounce it officially.

Well, there are others going for shoujo..."Strange Dawn", "Angelic Layer", "Mao-Chan", "Princess Tutu", "Soar High Isami!", "Figure 17", "St. Tail"....

I just wish some network out there would take a chance one of these series limited to video so far, just to find out the real potential of a relatively unhacked girl power anime....
