The one notable thing I've run across is that RightStuf announced the classic Astro Boy series for 2006. As near as I can tell no other reports are up yet. I'm sure when information on other panels are published ANN, Anime on DVD, and Toon Zone will be all over it.
I would suggest that it's not the medium, but the quality of perception and expression, that determines the significance of art. But what would a cartoonist know? -Bill Watterson

Lance said straight out in the ask a FUNi rep thread that they had big news planned to announce at Otakon, but because the contract hadn't been fully signed yet they had to wait until another convention. Rumor has it that it's Bleach, but it wouldn't surprise me if it ended up being Hunter x Hunter since it was done by the same guy who did Yu Yu Hakusho, and they do like going after series with the same creator.

Argh, stupid contracts. My guess is that the licenses are Bleach/Negima and BECK.

Straight from an Otakon attendee (me):

At the FUNi panel, the topic of new licenses was brought up at least twice, and all Lance could say was that they were actually planning to make TWO big announcements at the con (if I recall correctly), but they couldn't because the contracts weren't officially signed, yadda yadda. Of course, this was followed by a little fruitless pleading and a general feeling of disappointment by the audience.

I also learned that Lance is undoubtedly the fastest DVD unwrapper in the world.

Two big announcements, eh? Well, that certainly leaves room open for a series that isn't the worst kept secret (Beck). Bleach certainly looks like the most worthy candidate, and with a show like that I'm willing to bet the contract will ask for a television broadcast.

Which I believe they've held the rights to for about ten years.

Hmm, well one is probably Beck. I wonder what the other is? Maybe a Black Cat pre-airing license for the next Gonzo series? Or Bleach... Dare we dream?

Isn't it essentially a Given that Funi will get the FMA movie? the only difference I can think of is the Eva movies, but those were sat on for so long and ADV hadn't done anything withthe original series before that, so ti's kinda understandable. I don't think Funi would let something that , from what I hear, Completes the series (or at least the season...I really don't know)

Actually, according to a spokesperson from ADV, the reason why ADV didn't get the EVA movies is because Gainax was asking for an insane amount of money for them. ADV said no thanks, and Manga took advantage of that.

That wouldn't be huge news. Something like redubbing Sailor Moon or to a lesser extent licensing Bleach would be big news.

I thought Funi already announced Beck.

Anyway, aside from CPM, what got announced? CPM's line of crap is nothing I care about. How about something good (then again, anime has sucked recently)? What about Bandai or Geneon?

What is so great about Bleach though? I saw a few episodes and found it to be quite boring.

Speaking of YYH, when is CN going to air the rest?

No, Funi hasn't announced Beck yet. However, Tokyopop, in the first volume of the Beck manga, announced that Funi will be releasing the anime in March 2006. Funi has yet to confirm that with an official announcement.

Anime Nation Entertainment licensed the Hare Guu series and showed the first episode at their panel. Bang Zoom! voices and the first DVD will be out in December I think.

Bandai's panel sent word to Otakon that they would not be able to attend as early as Friday I believe. They ended up being a no-show, too bad.

I think the real treat was the voice actors. They did quite a few crazy things like throw Snow Balls (the cake) into the audience. A girl also took off her bra to get Matt and David's attention during the ADV panel on Saturday. And as mentioned, Lance tore off the dvd seal with his teeth in like 10 seconds. It pays to get there early.
