because Hisashi Hirai has about 3 character designs, total.

And they get reused more than the jokes on Sealab 2021.

    Well, the title referenced Sealab.

Wow, those designs are too similar to GS/GSD. Shinn, Athrey, and Stellariallia.

I'm still thinking about buying it, but I'm not sure. I get enough angst from Gundam Seed Destiny...

Left to right: Rey, Mirialia/Stellar, Shinn/Athrun.

I don't dislike Hirai's designs, but you can only have so many similar looking characters. Eh, oh well.

This sounds like a series I'd be able to like, but the biggest thing holding me back would be the robot design, specifically the Fafner. It doesn't click as well for me, either.

That's because the security company is named "Alvis," the same name as the fake religion created on Sealab. If I was an actually good at writing comedy, the entire review would be a Sealab/Fafner crossover.

I thought it was a double reference

    Bebop Cola= Sealab

    Bebop= Cowboy Bebop

Because Fafner takes place in the future and has parts in SPAAAACE

I actually liked Fafner, yea it's overly-dramatic and angst-ridden, but I liked that it was a bit darker and had some good moments to it.

Should have picked someone other than Hisashi Hirai though.

I'm personally seeing Regalli, Murrue and Shathrun. Who wants to create a conspiracy theory somehow connecting all the series this guy has worked on?

You just have to hate the way he makes his characters look sad. No wait. You have to LAUGH. Seriously, everytime I see a Kira or Kazuma looking sad I burst out laughing. Yeah, it's no wonder you're so sad Kira #308. Do it for the sake of freakin' comedy.

As for this show. Eh, I never really got into it. Wasn't bad for what I saw, but didn't pull me in.

I don`t really see(or have) a problem with his designs other than that they are similar to each other. IMO, they looks fine on their own.

I agree with you that viewing them in their own isolated series they're ok. Even there though that can be a stretch (compare a good number of the Destiny designs to the SEED designs). It doesn't help that he's getting more and more projects, meaning that we're seeing the work of a 'designer' who already stretches himself thin coming off as even worse, as his projects begin to lose any kind of individual flair. If you look at a designer's work and are straight off reminded strongly of something else from a seperate piece of work they've done, that's bad design. Plus, his designs need to stay on model or they look even worse. I can cite a number of times in SEED and SEED Destiny when the animator's have gone off model and made the character designs look a) really ugly
    Spoiler:
Drowning Stellar suddenly looking really butch, for instance
    b) even more like other designs of his (Kira and Cagalli in the second SEED OP, Stellar looking like Flay in the second Destiny OP, etc).

Fafner had a great OST, and that was about it IMO. Seriously, loved Angela's OP/ED, loved the work done by the Warsaw Symphony Orchestra IIRC (real symphony with great music and arrangements > the usual poorly arranged synth junk.)

On that note, the Warsaw Symphony was also used for the Sousei no Aquarion OST. Go check it out.
