The Wikipedia article goes into rather more detail about the soundtrack issue, but unfortunately - aside from message board discussions - I could only find one source to use.
Wikipedia also claims that the short was voted the 18th best British film ever made. I'm not sure what poll this refers to.

I would suggest that it's not the medium, but the quality of perception and expression, that determines the significance of art. But what would a cartoonist know? -Bill Watterson
