This category's pretty underused right now.
Would anyone object if I added any cartoon that's classified as science fiction by IMDB to this list?

I see no reason why that would be a bad idea. I have seen some errors on IMDB, but I doubt that they would have an incorrect genre listed for an animated program. Besides, getting more shows listed on the page would expand the wanted pages list, which could encourage more people to volunteer and help get those pages created.

Okay, I've looked at IMDB and our wiki side-by-side, if we go with this idea then the science fiction animation category would include -

    Ben 10
    Fullmetal Alchemist
    Futurama
    Gurren Langan
    Justice League
    Mobile Suit Gundam
My Life as a Teenage Robot
    Samurai Jack
    Nausicaa
    A Grand Day Out
    The Secret of NIMH

...and more (haven't looked through the whole lot yet)

My main concen is that purists might think we're misusing the term. I mean, over at the entertainment board there's a thread where people are questioning whether or not superhero movies can be called science fiction, so once you include a Wallace and Gromit film in the genre, then... well.

I've also noticed some strange anomalies - the original Gundam is classified as sci-fi by IMDB, but Gundam Wing isn't. Neither's Krypto the Superdog. Odd.

It’s been ages since I’ve seen “A Grand Day Out”, but I see no reason why it shouldn’t be included on this list. Its plot may have been comedically absurd, but I don’t believe that has any bearing on its genre. As difficult as it may be, we can’t always allow established convictions to be the only convictions that are considered valid; a lot of the “purists” that you’ve mentioned hold science fiction near and dear to their hearts, but that doesn’t entitle them to have the only word that matters.

I have no problem with the list that you’ve proposed.

The only other issue is how we deal with subgenres - I mean, consider the category for mecha anime. Since all mecha anime are sci-fi, does that mean we add each one to both the science fiction and mecha categories? Or do we just add the mecha category to the sci-fi category?

I’m not really sure. Despite my best intentions, I don’t really have that much experience with this sort of thing. Theoretically, I believe that it would be best to add such shows to both categories; it may be somewhat redundant, but redundancy, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. Having those shows in both categories will allow for easier navigation, and allow individuals to make better use of their time when searching for knowledge. I just believe any pages created for sub-genres should make sure to link to the appropriate genre that it relates to, and vice-versa.

Okay, I've got started on adding cartoons to the category. Just so everyone knows, IMDB doesn't list Dragonball/DBZ, B:TAS, Fred and Barney Meet the Thing or Captain Planet as sci-fi, so (for now, at least) I'll be leaving them out.
