    First Lupin Series?

    Like This Thread!
    Hi!
I have a question about the Lupin show that came before the one that AS has; I heard it was more of a serious/drama type of thing, is that true? Or is it just like the one we're watching only with the characters meeting each other for the first time, etc.?

I haven't seen it, but I did hear it's a lot more serious and dramatical then the Second Series. Also, it dosen't throw all the main characters into the story if they do not need to be there (For example, I heard Zenigata is only a few of the episodes, usually the ones where he is an intergal part of the story). You could check out the Funimation DVD's of the Lupin the III movies, which are based of the first seasons to see what kind of humor quality they have to the original if you want.

Didn't Miyazaki have something to do with the first Lupin?

According to JeffTMB, it's much more serious and comedy is very low. Zenigata is actually a threat to Lupin and not some comedic fellow. I heard that it is more accurate to the manga. I don't know about the 2nd series and how accurate it is to the manga, but maybe JeffTMB or Lupin the Wolf can help you?

    Yes, he did.

Then the episodes must be brilliant (not that the second season wasn't Miyazaki directed some of my favorite anime's and movies : Princess Mononoke , Spirited Away , and the much ignored Blood Reign the mystery of the stone or something . Does anyone know where we can get these much talked about episodes from Season 1 ? I'm getting Castle Of Cagliostro so that might help ..

Yet another argument for the CN getting the first Lupin. Be associated with a cult icon!

I think there are fansubs around, but Pioneer has already licensed the first series. They just chose the second series to be dubbed, since it's the most popular Lupin series.

I really prefer the comedy Lupin right now. People keep treating anime like it's all one genre, and Lupin is the only show on Cartoon Network that's not space action/feudal era/sci-fi.

Well it wasn't too long ago when CN didn't even have the "feudal era" in there, so they ARE making progress.

Arbitrary facts about the first Lupin III show
    • -Lupin's coat is green. (In the third series it's pink)
    • -Fujiko's a red-head. (In the third series, she's blonde)
    • -Mr. X (from The Return of Lupin III) was a re-accuring character
    • -There are only 23 episodes, as apposed to the second series, which has 155 episodes.
    • -Goemon wasn't introduced introduced in the sixth episode.

Correct me if any of these facts are wrong.

From what I know, the first seven episodes were not done by Miyazaki. They tried to follow the manga, but they felt that wasn't a successful approach and opted for Miyazaki to come in and handle the rest of the episodes, changing the series to a more light-hearted approach.

    It's good stuff, believe me.

Although I still prefer the second series.

From what I've read at IMDB.com, Miyazaki was involved in both the 1st and 2nd seasons of Lupin III.

I believe Miyazaki was involved with a few episodes in the second season. If anyone hasnt seen Castle of Cagliostro already, go buy it, now.
    Its the final countdown.

He directed 2 episodes in the 2nd series episode #145 Albatross Wings of Death & #155 Farewell Beloved Lupin. Farewll beloved Lupin is like anouther Cagliostro. The heorine Maki, is a dead ringer for Claisse.(they have the same seiyu Sumi Shimato). Also the robots from Laputa make an appearance

I believe the first Lupin series is based on the original Lupin manga which begun in the 60s, and the second series is based on the New Lupin manga which begun in the 70s.

Hmm, I was under the impression he directed a few more from season 2. Both episodes you mentioned are available on Streamlines Lupin IIIs Greatest Capers video release. I picked it up years ago at a Mom/Pop video store that was having a going out of business sale, it introduced me to Lupin and I shortly there after I bought Castle of Cagliostro. Also on the Streamline tape they have a different opening sequence from the ones I have seen from season II, is it from later in the season? Also, did anyone pick up the first Lupin III manga release from Tokyo Pop? good stuff.
    Its the final countdown.

I've got the entire first series in fansubs on video.

First off, the series is much more violent. I'm not talking Ninja Scroll violent here, but a lot more people get shot/killed/whatever than the second series.

There are two different OPs for the series.

Lupin has a lot of henchmen. Many of which die for him. There is lots of talk of Lupins "organization".

The first series has not been licensed in the US yet.....so technically you're not outright violating copyright buying them.

Who knows what might happen if someone emailed me.
