Kakashi struggles to recover from his overuse of the Sharingan in Tezuna's home. While recovering, he concludes that Zabuza is still alive, noting inconsistencies in the tracker ninja's actions. The tracker ninja turns out to be a boy named Haku, who is working as Zabuza's partner. To prepare them for another round against Zabuza, Kakashi begins chakra control lessons for Sasuke, Naruto, and Sakura by making them climb trees. Meanwhile, Haku realizes that if they screw up on Gato again, there will be no cover for them from the Hidden Mist's trackers, and so they have to keep Gato unharmed and prepare for a final showdown.
