Undoing the lock with a hairpin all in the span of the executioner swinging his sword. Yup, totally realistic.

Last time: Hey, buddy...you gonna eat that?
Yep. I wasn't worried. Hairpins solve EVERY problem.
A chicken in every pot and a car in every garage!
Of course he says that RIGHT WHEN he's about to be killed.
Kirara...tough talk. Me likey.

"I guess we were wrong about him."
Give him a little longer kiddo.
A miscarriage? Well, that's convenient......or inconvenient.........oh god.
Kikuchiyo sure knows how to make an entrance.
Oh dear. Miscarriage.
Capitol is friend to all children.
"Uhh, my lord, I don't think we should rely on an accident happening. We probably should just destroy Kanna village ourselves."
Could be worse.
Spoiler:
Oh Komachi. Dear sweet naive Komachi.
And free rice now.
I can't reply to that without sounding political.

So much for filial piety. He must get it from his father.
Don't elevators have weight capacities?
Uh oh. Time for a student-sensei conference.
Uh, Kiku...not now. Please.

It's called Stockholm Syndrome, Kirara. Shouldn't you guys know about that? I guess no one care about psychology in the Samurai 7 world.
I thought that this episode was okay. I was a bit disappointed that Kambei got out of there so easily with a hairpin. It seemed like an anticlimactic way of handling his escape. Ukyo obviously has something else planned by letting them go and taking the women with them. Sanae having a miscarriage, while adding more trauma to her already traumatic experience, might at least avoid telling that detail to Rikichi later. Both Kiku and Katsushiro were pushing their luck with Kambei like that, so I wasn't surprised that he hit them both. Overall, it was an okay episode and hopefully next week's episode will be interesting as well.
I LOLd when Kambei hit Katsu and Kiku. That was awesome.
Random quote (changes once in a while)
"I have sacrificed much to achieve peace. So too must a new generation sacrifice to maintain that peace. Responsibility! Duty! Honour! These are not mere virtues to which we must aspire! They are essential to every soldier, to every king!"

The last thing this show is is realistic.
You have robotic ninjas, flying water heaters, escalators, electronic banners, and other technology. Yet they can't make a decent lock. Watch that scene again and you will see that the guy does NOT pick the lock. He inserts the pin into the lock without twisting his wrist and the lock opens. The lock had a keyhole yet it acted like a button. If his finger was 1-2 inches longer, he could have opened the lock with a simple push. This is proven even further later on when another character opens the door properly by turning their wrist.
Samurai 7 has the worst use of technology in a show since Reign the Conqueror. It also is the most obsessive when it comes to rice. I'm convinced that rice is to Samurai 7 as spam is to Monty Python. They should have called the show "Samurice". I have lots more to say about this show but I want to save it until the last episode airs. I will say that it makes me want to eat Rice Krispies while watching.
Kitschensyngk, I really appreciate your comments on the series. I'm pretty much the same way but far more unforgiving. I'm treating the viewing in a very similar way when I watched Reign the Conqueror (check the archives and you'll see how I almost lost my mind trying to stand that show). It's laughably bad.
I'm not as bothered about Kambei picking a lock with a hairpin. I've seen heroes pick locks with hairpins lots of times. It's even got its own page on TVTropes.
Reign: The Conqueror confused the ever-loving HELL out of me.Kitschensyngk, I really appreciate your comments on the series. I'm pretty much the same way but far more unforgiving. Samurai 7 handles its anachronistic technology a lot better, in that it doesn't interfere with the story. Plus, as a bonus, we don't have to see Ukyo in a codpiece. *euuugh*

And yet that lock was more like a button. He could have unlocked it by pressing it with his finger.
I think it does interefere with the story though. For example, how was the emperor able to talk while he was in that tank? How come he didn't sound like he was under water? How did people hear them (there weren't any speakers as far as I know)? Are they all telepathetic all of a sudden? I also don't recall the emperor's mouth moving. I'd expect that from Pilot Candidate - not Samurai 7.Reign: The Conqueror confused the ever-loving HELL out of me.

There is all of this technology, yet no one uses a phone.
