This episode marks the end of the Introduction Arc. Next week, we begin the famous Land of Waves arc. But there's still some business to attend to before we get to that famed arc. After all, Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura have to pass first. And , , , Kakashi, as you can see, is not going to make it easy.

Last time on Naruto:

Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura are the last ones to meet their teacher, Kakashi Hatake, who runs extremely later, and Naruto ultimately pranks Kakashi with an eraser. Kakashi decides that his students are a bunch of idiots but nevertheless makes a half-hearted attempt to get to know them better. The next day, Kakashi begins his test of the students to see if they are truly worthy to become genin, or junior ninja. They have to take two bells away from him. The catch is that the losing student will not get lunch, he's puts the students at a disadvantage by not allowing them to eat breakfast. Sasuke and Sakura immediately hide to try to get an ambush, but Naruto directly confronts Kakashi and gives Kakashi everything he has, only to be repeatedly defeated and humiliated until he's literally strong up on a rope. Sasuke, however, realizes that Kakashi has let down his guard and unleashes a kunai and shuriken blitzkrieg upon Kakashi, and Kakashi is apparently cut down by the blades . . .

Ah, the power of teamwork. Now we just need a Motivational Poster, and the episode will be all set.

I actually liked this episode, even going In Media Res. The action was nice, there was a lot of emotions going through all three characters, and we got some good character development.

It seems interesting that they took some time to note the monument, that all the ninja listed there were killed in action. It not only highlights how dangerous their job is going to be (so they should stop being so childish and get serious), but also introduces the theme of sacrifice. It links back to Teamwork, in which the one must give up the self to serve the whole. Hopefully the theme of Self-sacrifice will continue.

It was great to see the scenes where Sakura made a fool of herself (Naruto as well). Sasuke may be self-centered, but at least early on, he isn't a fool, and his "ugh" reactions to Sakura were good.

I would have said Anko, but Kakashi is a close second.

Sakura: "Oh no! Sasuke is in trouble! I need to do something!" *faints*
She does that at least twice in this episode. At least Naruto and Sasuke confronted Kakashi to try to get the bells. What does Sakura do? Nothing.
