"The Joke Stops Here" - I guess the fans must of been complaining too much about the "Penny's Dad is abusive and hurtful and treats Penny and her mom like crap" jokes that weren't there in the original version of Shin Chan. Obviously the team had to make sure those made sense by also picking segments that DIDN'T include Penny's dad (even his cameo here is black boxed over) which might of gotten pretty hard to do after awhile. As a result when seeing an episode about Penny depressed I guess they decided "hey let's try and actually get out of that whole we dug ourselves in this segment so we can move onto other things" and hoped the fans wouldn't really notice. Or notice and just support the decision. I kind of liked those jokes but they would of gotten tedious if they kept repeating. Besides the meta lines about the group being kind of sad they were over and Penny talking about her cousin loving her (maybe the next not there in the original running joke or at least a joke about that kind of joke being next) were funny. Not so much the rest of the segment though. I did like Georige wanting to be supportive of Penny's hard times, Ai's cameo of ragging on her and Shin saying they should just leave her alone and imitating the mother in one scene but a lot of it fell flat. Maybe because desipte Penny being angry getting old seing her emoly sad for six minutes didn't feel like too funny situation. Oh well it wasn't that bad a segment and at least they got those jokes out of the way now.
"Book' Em, Shin-O" - At first I thought this would be one of those overly used sketch ideas of Georgie just being annoyed and torutred by Shin the whole time and the only highlight being some good old rebuplician bashing lines (just before the debate started ironically enough heh heh). Instead this turns out to be a lot better: Yeah Shin tortures Georgie here but the real victim is some jerkface studying for some drug exam. Obviously changed from the japanese version but snother one of those funny changes. Plus the fact he pushes the two out of the way makes his torture seemed justified at the very end by being kicked out by the Ah-nuld sounding libarian. There were also some good jokes in this one: the various books (Winny The Boo, Regan's book, the various book pile at the end including something about Oprah), Shin only being able to read ten words and the only one that has more then one syllable being p****, Shin and Georgie having to share a seat, Shin asking about how come the terminator in the third movie didn't have to strip naked, the ten phrases that become have become staples in the show (including the "it's a show" meta gag as well as making fun of Mitzy and Hiro and "(blank) ho" and such"), the other meta line about the action not being good but there being some funny one liners and the ending. Overall a solid segment highlighted by Shin torturing someone who defintley deserved it.
"The D****r Saga: Disciples For The Truthery" - In order to keep this saga intersting they keep adding characters to it. First we saw Mitzy interact with Kenta, then some Rober guy, and now Shin's friends. I think Shin's friends put the most interesting twist on this since they're interactions are mainly with Shin instead of Kenta making this a pretty good segment. Weaker then the last segment but still had some pretty good moments: Hima making Shin trip over hismelf and chucking cookies as ninja stars, Shin talking about how he just uses Kendo as an excuse to hit stuff and make fun of Kenta's insanity, everyone getting a chance to try and imitate the strike (between Maso's whiness, Georgie's politcial strategies and Penny still having anger issues it reminds me that Shin's friends do have a lot of good potential even though I'm glad not every skit in every ep needs to use them), Boo sleeping while standing up, and the goofing off at the end as the narrator talks about the tournament "the likes of which has never been seen in any other anime". And when you're dub studio has done DBZ and YYH you know you have the expierence in talking about what's done what in tournament anime style. So overall decent segment but as stated weaker then the last one.
Overall a good middle but weaker ending and beginning. Lots of interesting stuff with Shin's friends in the 50th ep. Nothing special for the "golden" anniversary but still decent stuff.
Instead of just using this new signature to celebrate a thousand more post, let me list of all the great things you can expect of me on this board for 2012:
