    Dealing with .mpgs and .avis

    Like This Thread!
Hey, I was wondering if any of you guys knew a program that would let me take screenshots or steal frames from .avis or .mpgs. I was working on my new sealab site (a subsidary of http://orange.keenspace.com) and coudl use a lot of my favorite frames.

(and yes, my site will include an extensive guide to Othello using sealab characters)

Kind of. AldosCapture lets you take a screen shot of whatever is on your computer screen when you press "Print Screen." You can then edit the screenshots in Paint. If you can make your video files full screen, then it should work just fine.

Just put "AldosCapture" into a web browser and it should give you some sites where you can download it.

Even without that prog, if you press Alt+PrntScrnm then paste it in paint. However, Alt+Prntscrn does not capture streaming video. Thats my problem. I just want a player that has a "take snapshot" sort of function. I've seen some on macs but I'm not sure where I could locate one.

Pause the video to take a screen shot....That should work

It sounds like you're trying to capture from a DVD... from what I've heard, most screen capture utils just copy the info that's being fed to the video card. But at that point, your DVD video hasn't been decoded yet, so you're just going to get a blank image or static (depending on the player/screenshot util).

You will need to spend bouku bucks for a program that will capture images from players on your computers that use over lays or masks, such as when you play real player files on your comptuer or DVDs on your computer. I looked into it a while back and found that for a decent program that could capture what was actually on my screen and not return a black image would cost about $200.00 or more.
I'll try being nicer if you try being smarter.

To get screen caps from most video players you have to turn off the video card enhancment options. What video player are you using?

(I'm assuming your using the latest version)

Okay, goto Tools, Options, click on the Performance tab, then go down to the Video Performance section and turn Hardware Acceleration all the way to None (as far left as you can go), and finish it off by hitting Apply. After you do that you can start up the video and copy it into Paint with no problems.

Windows Media Player does play AVIs. Might some other program on your system set itself as the default program for AVI playing? You can probably open an AVI from within Media Player by using the File menu > Open command

I just wanted to thank everybody for the info as well, I've always had so many ideas that would requrie screen caps, and I was never able to do it until just now.

    As a reward:

It's not as much that it doesnt play .avis as much as it plays the sound normally and the video inpeccably slow. Then again, running windows ME on a 233mhz does that.
