What would you like to see on Adult Swim?

    Like This Thread!
Y'know...if Adult Swim is gona be around for awhile..I think we need some more shows! Anyway, how 'bout we compile a list of shows we'd like to see on Adult Swim. Can be a made-up show, an old already existing show, show based offa something else..??

    My list:
Clerks: Even though the "uncensored" tape is out now, It'd be nice if cartoon network picked up the show. The first 6 episodes, then we could pray that Cartoon Network would be willing to fund for more episodes. Perhaps ones with more "Kevin Smith crudeness". Heck, maybe we'd see Clerks cross over with the other View Askew movies? Clerks..meets...God..as Allanis Morriset...haha...

Johnny the Homicidal Maniac: It'd probably have to be on later than Cowboy Bebop..but still. With the success of Invader Zim, I can just imagine Johnny, with his murderous adventures. From turning a "Toca Hell" into a slaughter house...to his timely adventures in the netherworld...Oh..I'd love to see a Johnny cartoon. Heck, if they can get away with Zim stealing kids organs..they can show a wall of blood..and..everything else that goes on...hehe!

Trigun: While, personally, Trigun is probably better for Toonami, if it were on Adult Swim, we would be able to see it uncut. There's nothing really bad in it. Maybe a few bad words. Otherwise...oh yeah...Wolfwoods a chain smoker...but hey..that's what Adult Swim is all about!

Movies: Sure..it'd probably be around 2 or 3 AM when they'd show these..but perhaps we could get some niiice anime, mostly uncut. Or other good series? I'm thinkin' Akira..Armitage...Utena: the movie(minus the nudity..)...When the new Lupin movies come out..oooohhh..I'd love to see those! But, they could also show "Aeon Flux". The ol' MTV toon gone movie-series. Anyway..just a suggestion..

And how about more shows made by the "ghost planet" crew, huh?! And I'd love to see more shows like Sea Lab 2021...classic..yet modern..and a big joke at Hanna Barbera..haha...

My tremendous intuitive sense of the female creature informs me that you are troubled...

It definitely needs more variety. An hour of "Home Movies" is too much, and frankly so too is an hour of Williams Street productions (and I say that as a die-hard fan of SG:C2C).

One problem, I suspect, is that to excuse them running shows like "Cowboy Bebop" they feel they have to construct a lineup that is entirely offputting to younger viewers, so they go for jittery, illustrated radio fare like "HM" and "ATHF" and "Brak Show" and the rest. It's too much.

I'm thinking they need to loosen up and think of the Adult Swim block as an alternative-style prime time block. They basically have the elements in place: Sitcoms, hard-edge dramas and a late night show. Maybe if they put it together as a parallel night-time schedule, something like:

10:00 The PJs (or some such sitcom type show)
    10:30 Home Movies
    11:00 Clerks
11:30 Williams Street Theater (rotating SeaLab, Harvey Birdman, Brak & ATHF)
    11:45 Cowboy Bebop
12:15 Cowboy Bebop (or Trigun or some other anime)
12:45 Space Ghost: Coast to Coast

That way you could start off with something relatively tame and safe for kids, and would gradually edge toward more "adult" stuff as the evening progresses.

It would be nice to know how the block is doing. I don't expect big ratings for a cable block late in the night, but surely some info can be released concerning the ratings?

I'd get rid of Aqua Teen Hunger Force in a heart beat.

I'd pick Clerks, Undergrads, Mission Hill, and the Oblongs as shows they should take from other networks and give them new life.

Duckman would be great, too, but let's not forget Clerks. Bob and Margaret and Dr Katz would be popular on Adult Swim too (and uncut! I know that Bob and Margaret contains some nudity, which they did show uncut on Comedy Central).

TV Funhouse, but without the animal puppets and live action stuff. Just have Smigel put together a couple cartoons that they could put on in fifteen minute slot each week.

I'd actually prefer to see more ORIGINAL Adult Swim shows. Instead of taking rejects from other networks (as good as some of them seemed to be) it would be cool if they could try some odd things with AS. As MZ said, variety should take precedence--maybe even some experimentation. I guess we'd see more original shows on AS sometime in the future anyway

    Here's a good lineup:

    10:00 Sitcom animation
    10:30 More sitcom
    11:00 Original AS program
    11:30 Original AS program
12:00 Some anime, maybe an odd one--here's a good one: Princess Nine. It's about a girl athlete in a baseball team. groan if you will, but it's variety!
12:30 Some drama, either anime or original AS program.

So what kind of new programming would you like to see? Personally, I'd kill to see Brad Bird develop a new series for Adult Swim. And I know Craig McKracken is capable of more than the Powerpuff Girls (in fact, he has some short cartoons on a DVD I have of a bunch of hard to find shorts. I forget the caracter he did on there. I think it's on a Spike and Mike compilation. I'd like to see him develop that character into an Adult Swim series.)

Taking cancelled shows from other networks (I hate to call them rejects, because I think of reject as something that is lacking in quality and none of the shows mentioned so far were lacking in quality by any stretch of the imagination) would be more ideal if they spun Adult Swim off to it's own network or dramatically increased the air time they gave it each week. Original programing is the best way to go; I don't think you'd get many new viewers by taking yesterday's toons.

Well, right now they are showing 2 eps of Home Movies, which seems wrong to me. I am now wondering if this has to do with the ratings as reported at the news page. (Home Movies was highest rated for all of AS!) I would like it if they replaced at least one of these, though this is probably unlikely because of the ratings. The quickest was to do this would be with an already-produced series, which I would like to be either Dr. Katz or The Tick. I would really like to see them start making Dr. Katz instead of Home Movies, especially since they seem to have the exact same voice talent so the only problem might be in getting guest stars as patients, which I don't think would be too hard. Ooh, or they could put in a block of the pre-Code Fleischer cartoons! I think that would be great! Just a classic risque-toon block, I know this would be different than the other material but I don't think that this would be so bad if it was starting out the block, the difference wouldn't be jarring. This could possibly include blackface gag cartoons too, and the Mammy T&Js. Okay, there's been talk about that before so that isn't quite my idea, but it's good. I also think that they could go with Maxie's suggestion of just reducing all of the new Williams St. shows to just one half-hour. They could also replace this with reruns of something at least for a short while until a new series could be made.

So, my ideal AS would go:

Uncensored Classics (pre-Code Betty Boop and Talkartoons & such replaces first Home Movies)

The Tick (replaces second 30 min Home Movies)

Williams St. (Random Williams St. replaces Brak Show)

    Dr. Katz (replaces Birdman/ATHF/Sealab)

    SGC2C (same place)

Cowboy Bebop fills last hour as usual!

    Well? Whaddaya think sirs?

Actually, I think HM is the highest rated show by virtue of its timeslot. As you noticed, the ratings got progressively lower as the night went by--most shows later in the night get lower ratings anyway. If you put any other AS show in the 10:00pm timeslot, the ratings may well be just as high.

    10:00 - Home Movies
10:30 - Daria (MTV clearly has no more interest in it)
    11:00 - Duckman
    11:30 - Williams Street programming
11:45 - various animated shorts (I remember that IFC used to show some in-between their movies. They stopped a long time ago, so they should end up here)
12:00 - Cowboy Bebop (full hour, as it should be)
I feel that a big problem with today's society is that we don't listen to our fellow man -- especially when I'm talking.

    I agree with Lonestarr--

--about Daria. I miss her something terribly! I also want to suggest once a month an animated adult movie for the nine to eleven slot before Bebop, and my first choice'd be I Married a Strange Person, by Bill Plympton. The sickest buggardly thing I've ever seen in cartoondom. I laughed my gluteus maximus off....

I thought the same thing. But still, I am not sure if CN would be willing to take the "risk" of replacing it with something else. Maybe yes, maybe no. And execs. don't always see things the way they should. I would be interested in seeing if the second Home Movies did as well as the Brak Show when it was in that block.

    Speaking of Daria...

What happened to the DVD release that was supposed to be coming out this December? Nobody has it for pre sale yet.

I won't set up the Adult Swim line up, but I WILL give it some formal rules to go by:

    1) The Brak Show, and Space Ghost: A half hour each. I don't like those 15 minute incriments and it's really not neccessary to point them out. It stretches through a half hour, so we're cool.

    2) Ease off on the original AS programing for now. We did that in the beginning in order to fill the void between Brak and Space Ghost, and we got a few clunkers with gimmicks that probably won't last long. Make original shows, but take your time and put some CN muscle behind them before churning them out.

    3) Dr. Katz! I like Home movies a lot, but I STILL miss Dr. Katz. Maybe we could bring back Dr. Katz but fit this character into it or something. He's really funny too, wouldn't want to lose that.

    4) Ooooh FREAK OUT!! Freakazoid!!! "Sorry about that ma'am, I set my pager to: 'vibrate my bottom!' " This show needs more play, physically and fanbase wise. It deserves it.

Wow, praise from Caesar. Really, though, MTV just shoved it off the schedule for what? Crappy game shows (there will never be another "Remote Control"), making of specials and "Real World" crap. If you haven't already, there's a petition to get Daria on DVD that you should sign. It's at www.petitiononline.com/dvdaria

Personally, I would like to see Terry Moore's "Strangers in Paradise" comic adapted for AS. But then Williams Street wouldn't be able to rehash an old HB series to do it, so it won't happen...
