At first glance, Greg Universe doesn't seem like the type of person you could rely on. He's a man who lives in his van, operates a failing car wash, and dresses like he just got up in the morning. He's not always dependable and he's completely out of his depth when it comes to Gem matters, forcing him to stay behind while his son, Steven, lives with the Crystal Gems in order to be trained. It's easy to assume this man couldn't find his way out of a paperbag, but once you get to know Greg, you'll find a pretty great guy.
In his younger heydays, Greg was once a professional musician who barely made ends meet. Touring across the country, he eventually arrived at Beach City where he met his number one fan: Rose Quartz. The two pursued a romantic relationship and eventually had Steven. Because Rose had to give up her physical form in order for Steven to be born, Greg ended up a single father. With more responibility on his plate, Greg has since made a home for himself in Beach City, raising Steven alongside the Crystal Gems: Garnet, Pearl, and Amethyst.
He may not have ended up as the glamorous rock star that he always wanted to be, but Greg never resents his life or the people around him. Never one to hold grudges, Greg is a laid-back man who goes with the flow. Though Steven's compassion for life came from his mother, it's clear he got just as much kindness from his father. Greg is nice, sensitive, and ultimately supportive. He's the best father Steven could ask for, always ready to lend a hand whenever his son needs it. Greg may not always understand Gem behavior, but he'll go out of his way to ensure Steven embraces both his Gem and human heritage.
Greg is definitely the living embodiment of his quote, "If every pork chop were perfect, we wouldn't have hot dogs."
