Nintendo boss Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed that Pikmin 4 is in development and will be out for the Switch sometime in the future. “I’ve been told not to share anything about this from PR,” Miyamoto said to Eurogamer while chuckling, because he’s Mario’s daddy and can break any order he wants, “but I can tell you it is progressing.”
The Pikmin series usually involves small people from outer space exploring a mysterious planet with the aid of dozens of plant creatures they pluck out of the ground and control en masse. In Pikmin 2 the planet was heavily implied to be Earth, although not a single animal in the series can be found in real life.
Nintendo released a follow-up statement later: “We can confirm that Pikmin 4 is in development but that is all we can confirm at present.” The last Pikmin game, Pikmin 3, came out in 2013 for Wii U.
What’s interesting is that when this same dude sat down with this same site two years ago, he told them the next Pikmin was close to being done already. “It’s actually very close to completion,” Miyamoto said. “Pikmin teams are always working on the next one.” It’s possible he wasn’t referring to Pikmin 4 at all, but Hey! Pikmin, a sidescrolling puzzle game created by a different dev team. Hey! Pikmin will be out for the 3DS July 18, for those who miss the little guys and are willing to accept a radical departure in gameplay styles.
