Disney Trades Sportscaster for Cartoon Rabbit

by on February 10, 2006

Heidi MacDonald’s The Beat weblog notes that the Walt Disney Company has traded ABC sportscaster Al Michaels to Universal/NBC in return for the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Oswald is an animated cartoon character created by Walt Disney in 1927, pre-dating Mickey Mouse; Universal has held the rights to Oswald’s cartoons for 77 years. Animation historian Jerry Beck goes into more detail about Oswald and what the rights acquisition may mean.

In addition to Oswald, Universal also traded golf and Olympic highlight broadcasting rights to ABC for Michaels.

In a related story, an article at JimHillMedia.com details Disney’s spotty history of preserving its own historical materials.
