Disney Not Planning Animated Marvel Feature Films

by on September 2, 2014

Even though Walt Disney Feature Animation’s Big Hero 6 is based on a Marvel Comics superhero team (and mini-series) of the same name, and Disney now owns Marvel Comics, there are currently no plans for the parent company’s animation studio to dabble in the expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe films. According to a post in New York magazine’s Vulture weblog, Disney Feature Animation Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter stated that Walt Disney Feature Animation has not discussed making a Marvel Universe movie that fits with the live-action offerings, saying, “If we went directly into the Marvel Universe, that would mean we’d work more directly with Marvel,” and adding that Big Hero 6 was “made 100 percent” at Disney and that Marvel had “forgotten the books existed.”

Lasseter’s comments line up with Marvel’s lack of enthusiasm for the animated Big Hero 6, since there are no planned comic-book tie-ins to the movie in Marvel’s November advance solicitations, and Marvel executives have confirmed that there are no plans for any.
