The Walt Disney Company announced on Monday that it will not go forward with plans to screen a 3D edition of its 1989 film The Little Mermaid this year. After the 3D edition of The Lion King earned nearly $100 million in 2011 Disney had announced plans to convert the film to 3D for a theatrical release on September 13th, 2013, following the same treatment for Beauty and the Beast, Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc. However, the cancellation news comes in the wake of the 3D versions of those three films earning progressively less money throughout 2012 ($47.6 million for Beauty and the Beast, $40.7 million for Finding Nemo and $30.5 million for Monsters, Inc).
The Little Mermaid is tentatively slated to be released on Blu-Ray in Fall 2013, though a release date has not yet been announced. Confirmed Disney Blu-Ray releases this year include a Diamond Edition for Peter Pan on February 5th, as well as movie collections for Mulan, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Brother Bear on March 12th.
