Remember how SNL’s David S. Pumpkins took over the Internet last year? He basically just says his name and “Any questions?” afterward. Is that enough material for a half-hour animated special?
We’ll find out together. NBC revealed today that they’ve commissioned an animated Halloween special to air next month starring Pumpkins. Bento Box Animation will provide the movement. Tom Hanks is reprising the role, both in voice and in live-action form during bookend sequences.
According to Deadline, the cartoon is “set in a small suburban town on All Hallows’ Eve” and “centers on David Pumpkins and his skeleton sidekicks who show a young boy and his sister the true meaning of Halloween, answering none of their questions along the way.” This plot is nearly identical to the very real Michael Jackson Halloween special CBS is running around the same time, though that might not be intentional.
It’s interesting to note here: this special is not airing in prime time. Instead it’ll broadcast in place of SNL’s usual slot on Saturday, October 28 at 11:30 PM. Does this mean Pumpkins’ routine was too racy to run next to Will & Grace? Who knows at this point. The only two lines we’ve heard from Pumpkins are the same two he always says. Nothing else about the guy is known to the general public.
We figured Pumpkins would return this Halloween, we just didn’t know how much we’d get of him. We’re also convinced they’re going to attempt a movie at some point. We have no proof, except for the fact that nearly every SNL character that caught on even slightly has been given their own movie, to varying degrees of success. Any questions?
