GRIP: THE STRANGE WORLD OF MEN

Cover     Critically-acclaimed creator Gilbert Hernandez, Time Magazine's "Hot Pick for comics creator of 2001" (along with his brother Jaime, for their legendary comic Love and Rockets) brings his inimitable charm and wit to VERTIGO with the 5-issue miniseries, GRIP: THE STRANGE WORLD OF MEN. In the spirit of filmmakers David Lynch and Pedro Almodovar, Gilbert's colorful cast and irreverent sensibilities fuel a story that defies all genres and stereotypes of contemporary fiction.

Written and illustrated by Hernandez, GRIP begins when Mike Chang wakes up one day in the middle of a busy street. Exactly where he is and who he is are the least of his problems. At the moment, Mike's being chased by a group of heavily armed thugs known as The Overboys, while spewing out inane phrases and shaking uncontrollably as he runs for his life. And although he doesn't recognize his reflection, this is not a simple case of amnesia. Mike Chang's worst nightmares about gender, identity and conspiracy theories have collided — and who he was is far less frightening than what he's about to become.

In his quest for answers, Mike encounters a detective (and his grandmother), a strange dwarf couple, the silent Mystery Girls, and a smooth-talking know-it-all who may be Mike's partner in crime…if only he could be trusted. But who are they all to Mike? And then there's Mike's skin. It doesn't just seem to have a life of its own. It really does...and it's about to go exploring.

At once a horrific sci-fi thriller and a mysterious romantic adventure, GRIP is a unique and quirky story about the world at large and coming to grips with the skin you're in.

This project is supported with a 4-color poster, house and trade ads, and a website promotion at www.dccomics.com.

GRIP: THE STRANGE WORLD OF MEN is a 5-issue VERTIGO miniseries edited by Shelly Bond and is suggested for mature readers. Issue #1 arrives in comic-book stores November 14 with a cover price of $2.50 U.S.

WAR STORY: SCREAMING EAGLES

So far DC has announced two of four VERTIGO one-shots by writer Garth Ennis that explore the true horrors of World War II. The third of these 64-page Specials, WAR STORY: SCREAMING EAGLES, finds Ennis collaborating with the legendary artist of WATCHMEN, Dave Gibbons, offering a breathtaking look at war you won't soon forget.

Cover     SCREAMING EAGLES begins with an elderly soldier reminiscing about his days in WWII. His kids and grandkids are always asking him what it was like, how he got through it all, and how he survived. But he only has one answer for them…

To learn that answer, they must listen to him as he recounts the waning days of the war in Europe, where a battle-weary sergeant and the remnants of his decimated squad are sent to scout a remote chateau on the German front. What they find is a treasure trove of Nazi plunder and stolen luxuries the likes of which they never imagined in the previous months of bloody fighting. But they quickly find that sometimes having it easy can test a soldier's resolve as much as the worst firefight.

And the old soldier's answer? You'll just have to read SCREAMING EAGLES to find out, as both Ennis and Gibbons deliver one of their strongest efforts ever in this instant classic.

This project is supported with house ads.

WAR STORY: SCREAMING EAGLES is a 64-page VERTIGO one-shot co-edited by Tony Bedard and Will Dennis and is suggested for mature readers. It arrives in comic-book stores November 21 with a cover price of $4.95 U.S.

100 BULLETS: HANG UP ON THE HANG LOW
TRADE PAPERBACK

The shadowy and dangerous world of 100 BULLETS pulls another life into its web of intrigue in 100 BULLETS: HANG UP ON THE HANG LOW, collecting the Eisner Award-winning storyline in the third trade paperback of writer Brian Azzarello and artist Eduardo Risso's acclaimed hardboiled crime series.

Cover     HANG UP ON THE HANG LOW returns us to the gritty streets of the inner city, where the mysterious Agent Graves hands a young man called Loop Hughes one of his "special" briefcases. Taking the information provided, Loop tracks down his long-deserted father, who begins to introduce him to the world of mob enforcement. But Agent Graves, as always, has hidden motives for his actions, and in the violence that inevitably follows his generosity, more of his conspiracy is revealed — and still more questions are raised.

Reprinting issues #15-19 of this modern noir classic, 100 BULLETS: HANG UP ON THE HANG LOW features a brand-new cover painting by series cover artist Dave Johnson, and a special introduction by John Singleton.

This project is supported with house ads.

100 BULLETS is a 128-page trade paperback from VERTIGO and is suggested for mature readers. It arrives in comic-book stores November 28 with a cover price of $9.95 U.S.

AMERICAN CENTURY #9

"…an escape into a secret, cynical world where morality drains out like blood into a gutter." — Time.com

Cover     VERTIGO's ongoing series AMERICAN CENTURY has been wowing critics and fans alike, and new readers now have a chance to jump in on the action with AMERICAN CENTURY #9 — a perfect entry point issue written by series regulars Howard Chaykin & David Tischman, with guest art by Warren Pleece (THE MONARCHY) and a striking painted cover by John Van Fleet.

In "Route 66," a self-contained story, series star Harry Kraft, on his way out of Los Angeles, is an easy rider down the famous two-lane blacktop. But when he makes a pit stop at a roadside cafe, he finds a hot blonde who'll do anything to escape her dead-end marriage to a boorish mechanic. Harry loves her cherry pie, but is it enough to make him commit murder?

Discover why AMERICAN CENTURY has readers talking about one of the most interesting new characters around — Harry Kraft — and his daring adventures through a 1950s America steeped in sordid scandal, blatant hypocrisy and repressed sensuality.

AMERICAN CENTURY #9 is a 32-page from VERTIGO edited by Shelly Bond and is suggested for mature readers. It arrives in comic-book stores November 21 with a cover price of $2.50 U.S.
