Summary:
When Supergirl contracts a lethal disease, Superman turns to Luthor for help, but will Luthor help save her?

Description: Supergirl has been living at the Kent residence for quite sometime now, just incase ya don't know. One morning, Supergirl weakly enters the Kent household, covered strange looking splotches. She stumbles forth and collapses in Martha`s arms. Calling Clark immediately, Superman quickly arrives and takes Supergirl to the Fortress of Solitude.

Upon arriving, Superman puts Brianiac's orb to work. He uses Brainiac`s orb to investigate Supergirl`s sudden breakout. The informaiton is revealed quickly, and it startling! The virus ravaging Supergirl's body was rampant on Argo before a cure was found and given to every child at the age of fifteen. Kara was too young to be administered the inoculation at the age she was frozen. Therefore, she was never given the cure.

Using the orb to quickly find the ingredients of the cure, Superman finds all that he needs, except for Element X, which is an element unavailable on Earth. Short on time, Superman goes to STAR Labs to see if they might be able to replicate the molecule, but finds himself ultimately at a loss. Upon a janitor`s suggestion, Superman goes to Lex Luthor looking for help.

Agreeing to help the Man of Steel, Luthor begins at once on the cure and, when he has finished, tells Supes that he will not give it to him unless Superman voluntarily exposes himself to Kryptonite and ends his own life. Superman agrees and goes to see Kara for the last time, a tear dropping from his eye suddenly hits the sensor attached to Supergirl`s body, identifying it as Element X.

Using the teardrop and the other ingredients, STAR Labs comes up with the cure in no time, saving Supergirl`s life as Luthor broods in self pity over the fact that even he couldn`t recreate Element X, and yet Superman was somehow able to do so. The idea that Superman could beat him intellectually causes him to hurl the items from his desk and stare out the window in fury. (Thanx Superman Homepage!)

Comments: It's great to see Millar back in the saddle again and he doesn't dissapoint. Millar gives us a great story about a Superman determined to do whatever he can to save a life. While i think he goes a bit too far with Superman's willingness to sacrifice himself for another, it's played off nicely. We also see a cruel Luthor, in one of his cruelest roles ever. This is Luthor at his best! The art, as usualy with Almancio, is unbelieveable. He is able to make a completely sexy Supergirl, even when she's covered in disease and dieing. Now that's talent! Great story mixed with great art provides a great read. One quesiton comes to mind though? Why didn't he appraoch Batman on this? Surely it's take only meager seconds to get from Metropolis to Gotham.
