Title: Living (Scott) Free
Writer: Mark Evanier
Guest Penciller: Neil Vokes
Inker: Terry Beatty
Colorist: Marie Severin
Letterer: Phil Felix
Cover: Mike Manley & Terry Austin
Summary: When
Mr. Miracle escapes to Earth, Granny Goodness and some flunkies from Apokolips
attempt to recapture him.
Description: Mr.
Miracle arrives on the same day as the Daily Planet's charity circus. In good
timing, Granny Goodness chooses to exact her revenge this day on Mr. Miracle
(Scott Free). Mr. Miracle escaped from Granny sometime back and she wants to get
some revenge. Typical. Free escaped from her orphanage some years earlier and
Granny has been waiting patiently for this day to come. Why? So she can kill
Scott and get to go to the circus?

Review: It's
sorta bad timing that I read this issue after Legacy. No Apokolips, or Apokolips
related, story will ever hold up to Legacy. It makes this issue a bit less
enjoyable. There's also a few other things that make this issue a bit less
enjoyable. The story is good, but the art is less then good. It's not the right
style for the book or for the look. It's just...odd.
Evanier is able to deliver a good story which
finally gives us a full introduction to Mr. Miracle. We see him briefly for a
nano-second in the finale of Apokolips...Now! in the background and that has
been it. We were supposed to see more of him but Superman's run was then cut
from 65 episodes down to 54. Damn shame. Anyways, this is his formal
introduction into official animated continuity and it works. (Note:
Adventures in DCU stories are considered not to have taken place in the animated
universe.)
Overall, this story is a wee bit silly and the
art can't hold the story. If Aluir Almancio was doing this story, it would get a
higher rating. Or why not one of the many 'in-style' artists who did work on
last issues 22 stories? This story really is silly. A Pachydermatoligical Ray?
Whatever. Mark Evanier wrote a great episode for Superman: The Animated Series (Tools
Of The Trade) which remains a favorite of mine. He also wrote a pretty good
issue a while back. This story, though, is unable to hold itself through the
entire 22 pages. The issue doesn't have the clean, polished feel to it like the
cartoon has. Oh, and did I the story is a bit kooky. 'Nuff said.
