Summary: With
the world on the brink of destruction, and Superman trapped in the Phantom Zone,
who's gonna do what to save Earth?
Description:
Trapped in the Fortress, all by himself
and against Brainiac, Hamilton uses the resources of the Fortress of Solitude to
evade Brainiac, knowing Brainiac won't allow Earth to be destroyed without the
Orb in his possession. Meanwhile, in Metropolis, rescue crews are overwhelmed
with emergency calls. As Jimmy Olsen is pulled from the rubble caused by an
explosion in the Daily Planet building, Livewire appears from a rescue worker's
radio. After getting ragged out by Lois Lane, she agrees to go to the Fortress
to attempt to stop the nuclear missiles from being launched. Just as Professor
Hamilton runs out of places to hide from Brainiac, Livewire comes to his rescue
(Man, good timing!). She is able to temporarily disable Brainiac, but he is
strikes back at here. The is appears that Superman has returned. (thanx to
Livewire). Superman returns with a Thwaakk!, punching Brainy out of the
Fortress. Superman wants to kick some Brainiac booty, and he's pissed.
As Superman fights Brainiac (and for awhile, mind
you) , Livewire works at complete screwing all the computer systems controlling
the missile-launchers, but doing this costs her life. (Maybe...) All the
warheads are stopped; all but one. Once again, Brainiac thought ahead and made
sure that if this situation happened, there'd be one more warhead for
Supes to disable. Nothin' like bein' prepared. Superman must make a choice:
defeat Brainiac or stop the missile from destroying Metropolis. He makes the
choice to save Metropolis but...
Somehow, he is actually able to do both! Superman
grabs the missile and throws it skyward, atomizing both Brainiac and his
spaceship, and saves the day. (Insert 'Applause') Clark discusses Livewire's
sacrifice with a in-the-hospital Jimmy, and we learn that even if her body
survives, her memory has been wiped clean. (Yeah right...) Finally, we see that
Luthor has somehow been able to capture Brainiac's computer core. He begins
dissecting it with devil-like glee to learn what made the computer program tick.
This right here assures the return of Brainiac.
Review: Well,
a good story. Why Livewire goes to help out Superman is really beyond me. I
don't understand why she would actually help him out. Aren't she and Superman
enemies? Other then that, the story seems to work just fine. The art is still
really, really great. There are some great panels of Superman going medieval on
Brainiac's booty, which look really, really cool. A fine conclusion to a pretty
god two-part story.
