Issue #16 - February 1998

Title: Clark Kent, You're a Nobody!

Writer: Mark Millar
Penciller: Aluir Almancio
Inker: Terry Austin
Colorist: Rick Taylor
Letter: Lois Buhalis
Cover Art: Rick Burchett & Terry Austin

Summary:
Clark Kent finds out that he doesn't have any powers. There's some guy flying around saying he's Superman. What the--?

Description:
It's a typical day at the Daily Planet; the computer systems are down and Clark, Lois and Jimmy are sitting around the office. How come all jobs aren't like this? A plan is in need of a quick emergency landing, Clark Kent goes into action as Superman. He pulls open his shirt and jumps out the window. Problem. All he has under his clothes is an undershirt, and it's a long fall down from the top story of the Daily Planet Building! Superman swings by and saves Clark on his way to stop the plane from crashing into the streets of Metropolis. Clark is confused as what's going on. Who is this...Superman???, he thinks.

And that's the first couple pages.

Clark, understandably shaken up by the event of the morning, goes with Lois to hear Professor Hamilton give a speech on Kryptonite and the effects. Usual boring teacher stuff. After the lecture, Clark asks to see if touching it has any effect on "Normal humans". As he grabs the glowing kryptonite, he is astonished, and a bit peeved to find it has no effect on him. What the heck?

Superman continues to save people, avert disasters etc. and whatever else he usually does. As an odd turn of events, Clark is mugged and beaten up while on his way home. Clark goes home to Smallville, and talks to Ma and Pa Kent, trying to figure out what has happened to him, but they have no idea what he's talking about. He asks them about the spaceship that brought him and about his super feats growing up. This puzzles the heck outta Ma & Pa and they (of course) think he's just been working too hard and is having delusions that he once was Superman.

In the middle of their conversation, a tornado blows in. Superman arrives and saves both Clark and the farm, using the techniques that Clark would once have used. This right here is what possibly gives Clark his first clues to what is going on

Clark heads back to Metropolis, promising to seek professional help if he can't straighten things out on his own. When he gets back to the Planet, the computer systems are up, and Clark gets an e-mail that says "Today's the day" which is automatically generated every 90 days. Bingo!!!

Now I'm not gonna say anything more about this issue, because if you haven't figured it out by now then that's a darn shame. Ah heck, I ain't mean. Do you wanna know what's going on? Well, Clark is able to draw Superman's attention and he find out that Superman is...NOT TELLING! If you haven't read this issue before, then I'll give ya guys a break. If you wanna know who Superman is, then highlight the text below:

Superman is Mxy!! The hint was "Every 90 days". Remember, Mxy can come to Earth every 90 days and cause trouble, and that is what he did.

Comments:
A great story which shows us promise for Millar! Millar will be taking over SUPERMAN ADVENTURES in a few months, and if this story is any hint, then we are in for one heckuva writer! This story paired with Aluir's art makes the story a "can't miss" and awesome. The best that DC has to offer is in this title! I was really surprised by this issue. The mystery had me going until I saw the words "90 days" on Clark's screen. I knew what was going on. Kudos for Millar to making one heckuva mystery!
