Letterer: John Costanza
Colorist: Demetrius Bassoukos
Cover:
Walter Carzon & Mike DeCarlo

Release Date: November 6th, 1996
Cover Price:
$1.75 U.S./ $2.50 Canada

Summary:
The tale of a mouse who sells his soul to take over the world.

Description:
During a scary storm, Brain distracts Pinky with a story. It involves him, in the role of Dr. Faust, signing a contract with a cat named “Mr. Mephistopheles”, the “master of magic”, who’s not your average kiddie party magician. Faust has signs his soul over to him in return for ultimate knowledge. He rules the world, and it’s a wonderful period of prosperity, but the day comes when he must face Mephistopheles in the “Courtroom of the Darned.” Faust defeats him by pointing out if he’d had ultimate knowledge he would’ve found a loophole in the contract—Mephistopheles angrily takes back everything he’d given Faust.

Cameos include Bugs Bunny, Buster & Babs, and editor Robert Graff.

Pages (out of 32): 12 pp.

AYPWIP:
DOCTOR FAUST: Pinky, are you pondering what I’m pondering?

PINKY:  I think so, Doctor. But are these really the legs of a show girl?

Quote of the Story:
Once upon a midnight scary,
As I sat all white and hairy,
Barely moving as I watched
A raging storm outside.

Suddenly there came a crashing,
Crackling, booming—real nerve bashing—
Causing me to jump
And run someplace to hide!

Over to Brain’s desk I scurried,
Covering myself with charts I worried,
And Brain said…

BRAIN: Pinky, you idiot, it’s a storm and nothing more!

I tried to distract my fever’d mind,
With a book I’d read three-and-a-half times,
But I couldn’t stay focused
On the classic lore.

Nothing seemed to make my jitters go.
Not even Larry, Curly and Moe!
Only one person had the power
To put my heart at ease.

Fearing I would ne’er narf again,
I ran back to my bestest friend,
And asked him to distract me with a story…

PINKY: …Please?

Review:
Although the TV show later attacked the “Faust” / “Daniel Webster” lore in a different, and arguably more successful way in the Halloween special, this story is still very enjoyable. From the opening parody of “The Raven” to the magic show bit (with a little jab at Cats, with “Mr. Mephistopheles”) to the scenes of the world under Brain’s leadership to the final climax in the trial, I’d recommend this story to any P&tB fan. Also a really neat cover.

Title: “Clan of the Cave Mice”

Writer: Jesse Leon McCann
Penciller: Walter Carzon
Inker: Horacio Ottolini
Letterer: John Costanza
Colorist: Demetrius Bassoukos

Summary:
In prehistoric times, the mice try to find fire in order to rise to power above the humans.

Description:
After Brain is rejected as ruler by the humans, he sees a dinosaur get struck by fire. Realizing the power he’d have, the mice head off to get some, braving dangerous terrain, alligators, and worst of all, a dinosaur—Baloney, from Animaniacs. They finally retrieve fire from a volcano, but upon return, find that man has already invented the first cigarette lighter.

This story features no dialogue.

Pages (out of 32): 12 pp.

AYPWIP:
[BRAIN taps his head, then points at PINKY’s. PINKY shakes his head vigorously. He runs off and returns wearing a two-piece cavewoman’s outfit and with a monkey around his neck. He waves.]

Quote of the Story:
{None.}

Review:
A testament to the fact that P&tB aren’t completely dependent on dialogue, by any means. Carzon’s art is exceptional, even for him, and is once again complemented by Bassoukos’ gorgeous colors, giving the prehistoric terrain a beautiful, exotic effect. Lots of fun, and you don’t even have to be literate to enjoy it!
