Brain becomes sheriff of a small Western town,
but when he’s presumed dead after a gunfight, he
and Pinky portray their own ghosts, hoping to scare
everyone out of town so they’ll have all the oil.
Description:
Brain owns the only copy of the latest issue of
“Scientific Stuff” in the whole town of
Didliskuat. The magazine reveals oil as a fuel
source. Brain plans to take over the town and take
all the oil for himself, and no one will know the
oil’s true worth until it’s too late. He becomes
the sheriff, with Pinky as his deputy, but when they
get in a gunfight, they’re thought to be dead. So,
the mice head through the mines, digging tunnels as
they go, going under every house and playing their
own ghosts, scaring everyone out so he’ll own the
town. However, the tunnels that they dig take away
the town’s foundation, and the ground caves in. To
make it worse, the oil shoots up through the
ground—and someone has found Brain’s hidden copy
of the magazine, so everyone knows about the black
gold.

Quote of the
Story:
BRAIN: While we were in Tunnel Seven today, I
noticed a strata of oil-bearing shale—
PINKY: Say, I saw an
end-of-the-month clearance shale once! And just
yesterday Mr. Jackson advertised a white elephant
shale! It was during the church bizaar [sic], but it
looked perfectly normal to me!
BRAIN: Are you quite
finished?
PINKY: Oh, heavens
no! I could go on like this for hours, narf!
Review:
A very entertaining spoof of Westerns, although fans
of the genre will probably enjoy it a lot more than
those who are not. Look for all the cameos by
classic Western characters from TV and films
throughout, particularly in the various houses
during the “haunting” sequence. It’d be worth
it just for the hilarious cover spoof of Dirty
Harry (see
the scan).
