Title: "Away with Wurds!"

Writer: Joe Edkin
Penciller:
Leo Batic
Inker:
Jim Amash
Letterer:
Phil Felix
Colorist:
Bob LeRose
Cover:
Leonardo Batic & Mike DeCarlo

Release Date: June 9th, 1999
Cover Price:
$1.99 U.S./ $2.85 Canada

Summary:
The Warners play muses to horror novelist Manny Wurds.

Description:
Horror novelist Manny Wurds is locked in a vault, as an experiment to see if he can knock out a whole book from scratch in this time. Three Warners show up, in the form of three muses, and give Wurds the usual treatment. When he falls asleep from reading his own book, the Warners write the story for him, and when the groggy writer comes out the next day with the Warners' novel, it becomes another big hit for him.

Pages (out of 32): 8 pp.

Quote of the Story:
FAN: You know, most people think Manny's books are just about blood and gore and decapitations and killer chipmunks. But, like, these books are really about the human condition! I'd buy anything he wrote! I'd buy his grocery list! In fact, I bought one of his receipts last week--and boy, was it deep!

Review:
This story had the unfortunate luck of coming out just around the time that Stephen King (who is obviously being spoofed here) was hit by a truck. But at any rate, there are some really clever, funny bits, as well as some not so funny ones. All things considered, it's a solid, if fairly unremarkable, effort.

Title: "Crossed Signals"

Writer: Frank Strom
Penciller:
Walter Carzon
Inker:
Horacio Ottolini
Letterer:
John Costanza
Colorist:
Bob LeRose

Summary:
Brain plans to take over the world's TV broadcasts.

Description:
The mice stow aboard a space satellite, and use this position to take over the world's TV broadcasts. But Pinky, bored with Brain's broadcast, changes the channel to a nature special, without Brain's knowledge. As the people of the world are forced to watch a nonstop barrage of nature shows over the coming days, they learn to love each other, and peace finally embraces the Earth, much to Brain's chagrin.

Pages (out of 32): 8 pp.

AYPWIP:
{None.}

Quote of the Story:
BRAIN: The 24-hour deadline has passed, yet there has been no message from Earth! It is most curious. Perhaps I was too lenient.

PINKY: Either that or everyone's gone back to reading books.

Review:
Yuck. Not only has this plot been done a thousand times before (Brain taking over the airwaves? The mice in outer space? C'mon, guys—show some originality!), but the execution is totally wrong—the story reaches its climax when Pinky changes the channel only three pages in, thus ruining the plan. Everything following is basically filler to pad out the story. Not to mention that the dialogue is completely unfunny, the mice are rather out of character in places, and there's a shamelessly flagrant plug for the network to boot (that totally gratuitous Batman Beyond comment). Loads of other complaints, but suffice it to say that this isn't one of the better stories.

Title: "Monster of the Bride"

Writers: Sean Carolan & Jennifer Moore
Penciller:
Leo Batic
Inker:
Jim Amash
Letterer:
Phil Felix
Colorist:
Bob LeRose

Summary:
Katie Ka-Boom serves as bridesmaid at her cousin's wedding.

Description:
Katie's cousin Tiffany is getting married, and Katie is serving as a bridesmaid, despite the minor fact that the two can't stand each other. After Katie makes several minor errors, and Tiff humiliates her repeatedly, *BOTH* girls blow sky-high.

Pages (out of 32): 6 pp.

Quote of the Story:
TIFFANY'S MOTHER: Your little girl blows up too?

KATIE'S MOM: Small world, huh? Who knew?

Review:
As with the other two KKB stories the comics have published, this story works much better than the TV cartoons because it transcends the lame formula. This time, Katie meets her match, even moreso than in "Baby Boomer." Lots of Carolan & Moore's usual wonderful stuff. The two dads' conversation as their little girls tear the place apart is absolutely priceless.
