Summary:
The Warners bug James Dean on the filming of Rebel Without a Cause.

Description:
In 1955, after the lead actor in Rebel Without a Cause turns out to be a chicken (Boo, in a cameo), they find a new star at Schwabb's—James Dean. But the Warners, who have come to see the giant chicken, chase Dean all over, through various scenes of the film, driving him crazy. In the end, it turns out the cameras were rolling the whole time. Dean is hailed as a personification of America's moody youth, and the Warners open up an acting school.

Pages (out of 32): 10 pp.

Quote of the Story:
YAKKO: Let's follow him into that unassuming suburban household, the likes of which could never produce a juvenile delinquent!

DOT: Thanks for setting the scene, "Mr. Ambiance"!

YAKKO: Hey, can I help it if I read the cliff notes!

Review:
The debut of Carolan & Moore, who are probably the best writers to have regularly worked on the A! comics, and their first story is a perfect example of their great talent. Funny, funny stuff, although it helps to have seen the film being parodied. Full of good ol'-fashioned Warner zaniness.

Rating:

Title: "East of Burbank"

Writers: Sean Carolan & Jennifer Moore
Penciller:
Leonardo Batic
Inker:
Scott McRae
Letterer:
Teresa Davidson
Colorist:
Jo Meugniot

Summary:
Slappy and Walter audition for East of Eden.

Description:
1955, again, and another J. Dean parody. When the power company shuts down Slappy's electricity, she goes to audition for a film so she can pay the bill. She auditions for the role of "Kate" in East of Eden, as both James Dean and Walter Wolf audition for the lead role. Slappy criticizes James' performance, and whenever Walter comes on she blows him up in a variety of ways. In the end, she's put in charge of props, including explosives, while Walter is appointed as stunt boy.

Pages (out of 32): 6 pp.

Quote of the Story:
DIRECTOR: Okay, in this scene, "Kate" has just confessed that she shot Cal's father.

SLAPPY: Yeah? How come?

DIRECTOR: Well…for no reason, actually.

SLAPPY: My kinda girl!

Review:
Another enjoyable story. It's somewhat repetitive, as it follows a formula pretty similar to that of the first, but the duo does a good job writing for Slappy, and wisely keep it short but sweet (and explosive), resulting in an overall successful story.

Rating: ½

Title: "Grande!"

Penciller:
Omar Aranda
Inker:
Scott McRae
Letterer:
Teresa Davidson
Colorist:
Jahrome Youngker

Summary:
When a local taco guy is a total jerk to his customers, the Warners open a competing store.

Description:
As the Warners shop for Scratchansniff's present on "Bald Psychiatrist's Day," they go for tacos. But it turns out that this is the "Taco Tyrant"'s place, and anyone who talks or fidgets in line is thrown out. So the three go into business for themselves to get revenge. He makes several attempts at sabotage, but all fail, and when Wakko, digging for salsa, strikes the mother lode, the Tyrant knows he's beat. He heads to New York to sell soup. Wakko eats all the tacos, so the sibs sell their restaurant to some big Hollywood investors.

Yet another cameo by Pinky & the Brain.

Pages (out of 32): 8 pp.

Quote of the Story:
YAKKO: Wakko, you asked Dr. Scratchansniff what he wanted, right?

[Wakko thinks of Scratchy telling him, "Wakko, I'd like a copy of 'Pachabel's Cannon in D Minor.'"]

WAKKO: I know! He said he wanted tacos, bells, and cannons from Elmyra!

YAKKO: You've gotta hand it to Scratchy, the guy's got taste! Let's see…we could go to Elmyra's Bell and Cannon Emporium, but that would mean no tacos and contact with Elmyra…

WAKKO: …besides, nothing says "I love you" like a big greasy bag of tacos!

Review:
Another fine story, with a nod to "The Soup Nazi" episode of Seinfeld. Lots of great dialogue and jokes. Aranda's art is definitely improving.

Rating: ½
