"Cars 2" Takes Pole Position in Debut Weekend with $66.1M in Ticket Sales
Disney/Pixar’s Cars 2 handily won the top spot at the box office in its premiere weekend with $66.1 million in ticket sales, more than twice its nearest competitor (Sony’s Bad Teacher, with $31.6 million). However, the results were not among Pixar’s best; while the opening weekend take outgrossed the first Cars movie’s debut weekend ($60.1 million), it came in behind Toy Story 3 ($110.3M), The Incredibles ($70.5M), Finding Nemo ($70.3M), and Up ($68.1M). 3D ticket sales also only accounted for 40% of the total gross, representing a continuing trend of audiences spurning 3D at movie theaters.
Cars 2 also took in another $42.9 million (estimated) in foreign ticket sales in 18 markets.
